TV Out of the Box, The TV Land Awards....

Apr 17, 2012 01:31

Went to the Paley Center’s “Television Out of the Box” installation featuring Warner Bros. memorabilia. I have to go again because I didn’t think to check the battery life on my camera or bring extra batteries. FYI, The Paley Center for Media’s gift shop is the only gift shop in the universe that does not carry batteries. They have a WB StuntWoman shirt, but no batteries.

I’m peppering the post with pictures that are not mine. They’re from LA Times and bloggers ( a great many from Franklin Avenue’s blog ) who attended the April 12th mixer for WB brass and talent. K-Site TV has fantastic images from the mixer as well.

It’s this event that had me all confused. Last weekend I was all set to go then the time was getting away from me so I took off my shoes, got back into my PJs and decided to go another day. On the 11th bloggers/journos I follow on Twitter were tweeting back and forth about covering the WB event at the Paley Center so I thought “Good thing I didn’t go last Saturday because it’s not opened yet.” As a matter of fact, someone tweeted that the 12th was a private event and the exhibit was opening to the public on the 13th. When I went to the Paley Center I spent some time talking to one of the docents and asked him were they keeping the same display for the length of the run (it runs until April 2015). He says the plan is to switch it out every six months. I told him it should be easy since I guess most, if not all, were on loan from the studio and private collections, but he said that they have bought a lot of the items on display. They go to Ebay and find things they think relate and bid on them. He pointed out that three old school remote controls-the ridiculous ones with the huge three buttons---were bought online.

He says that the installation is a work in progress as they add and detract from the display almost daily. He said before the mixer they knew that actors were coming whose characters they did not have anything on display, so to not make them feel bad they quickly had WB wardrobe send them some pieces for those actors to see on display and the next day they returned it to the WB. He didn’t say which actors but I’m thinking the “Dallas” cast because they have “Dallas” props : J.R checkbook and his hat.

And “Dallas” cast was out in force
*Linda Gray, Charlene Tilton, her TV mom Joan Van Ark (of “Knots Landing”, which was a spinoff of “Dallas”), Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy”

The “Dallas” cast was in full force because they’ve also been on a publicity blitz for the upcoming “Dallas” return.

He also said the turnout hadn’t been too great because they’ve only just recently begun promoting it. The mixer was covered by Extra so that helped get word out.

There’s a four benches set up so that you can watch the opening credits to a selection of shows and sing-a-long with them (in theory. I don’t know if people would actually sing out loud there).

*That’s a Lego Conan O’Brien in the corner

I told the docent, “I’m sure you go to bed with these songs in your head.” He said I didn’t know the half of it. Even though they open to the public at Noon, they start the music at 8am because since they opened the exhibit WB execs have been popping in to see how things are, to see what needs to be added so the Paley Center exec opted to keep the display going as they would if the paying public were there. That means those poor people have to listen to the same eight theme songs: “The Big Bang Theory”, “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, “Growing Pains”, “Full House” I forget the others. They lyrics are also painted on the wall in block print.

First walking to the building you’re greeted by

Batman!

On the second floor

A bust of Wonder Woman

On that same level, there’s Pepe LePew and his elusive paramour

Bugs

The installation is in the second floor viewing room. Normally there’s desks set up so you can.. wait for it…view content from their archives. But they’ve condensed the room into a smaller room within that room and the rest of the area is dedicated to the installation. Before you enter the room there’s a glorious array of lunch pails, including a blue plastic Flintstones/Scooby Doo one that I had. Depending on my mood, I would switch it around to have one or the other side face me.

There’s also a wall of signed posters from Warner Bros shows including two “Smallville” ones signed by Tom.

There’s also a 49 Bugs Bunny plushies outfitted with custom designed outfits. There’s a guide listing each designer and it’s a mix of on the rack versus high fashion: Cynthia Rowley, Dolce & Gabbana, Badgley Mischka, Fila, Converse, Old Navy, Todd Oldham, Izaac Mizrahi, Stussy, The docent said that they are actually on sale and auction and they’ve sold 20 with at least one going for $8,000.00.

The one on the far top right with the sarong and turban is Isaac Mizrahi’s design

In that same area are two coin operated rides like ones outside of stores. One was the Flintstones car and the other a train with Superman on the front. I was green with envy as this little boy rode it (free rides). Not letting a little kid get to have all the fun, I went to the two rides all the way in the back and hidden from view that are by the elevator: Dino the Dinosaur from “The Flintstones” and the Batmobile. Now I can say I rode in the Batmobile. I had to do it side-saddle since those things are built for five year olds, but I did it.

Leading to the Batmobile and Dino is a timeline.

Normally that wall is bare. The wall opposite it is filled with Al Hirschfeld drawings. Now the bare wall is a full timeline from when Warners began and started in television, spotlighting their shows. The wall that normally houses the Hirschfelds now have correspondence from WB and other notable items like a patent for a TV accessory and a letter from some exec warning WB to stay out of TV and focus on film.

Now inside the room with the installation. There’s a picture of various TV actors on the WB lot in 1961. On the left hand side are items from “The FBI Files” starring J. Edgar Hoover, costumes from “Alice”( Linda Lavin’s uniform and a signed hat by Vic Taybac”), Kung Fu. Accompanying that is a letter from an exec stating that they had to tread carefully with Kung-Fu because they didn’t want it be cartoonish and the butt of jokes (namechecking Bob Hope) and that they wanted its longevity (“We want it to have legs: Think “Bonanza”, not “Batman”). To that end they didn’t want David Carradine to do interviews. Instead they wanted quotes from the script to go into publicity material so that people only focused on the show.

There’s Wonder Woman’s uniform

Her bottom is lilac/lavender

How it looked

I wish this fly outfit was on display

An outfit from “Murphy Brown”, production notes, a script and other material from “China Beach”. Along the far wall are animation cels from Hanna Barbera and DC Animation. Johnny Quest, Batman, Yogi Bear, Wacky Races, Scooby Doo and others. In the center of the room is a display from someone’s personal collection of Hanna Barbera toys and a collection of letters from kids from 1961 writing to their favorite characters. One boy wrote to Tweety Bird warning him from Sylvester. It was so cute.

There’s an “ER” display with badges from I think every single cast member. From Clooney and William H. Macy to Maura Tierney and Omar Mekhi Pfeiffer Epps. Dr. Luka’s passport, a letter that Anthony Edwards’ character wrote in the only episode that I ever watched. A board with their assignments. That display is shared with “Friends”. That has outfits from the cast, a turkey with glasses(?I think a Thanksgiving ep),

Phoebe’s guitar, a box of Smelly Cat, a comic that Ross wrote, the wedding ring of Monica and the vows she and Chandler wrote. Along the right hand side are costumes from Bablyon 5..

Supernatural
*Jared’s legs are, not suprisingly, smaller than Jensen’s

Other SPN memorabilia are three books by “Carver Edlund”, the fused rings from the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as well as SPN convention posters from that meta episode.

Next to SPN is “The Vampire Diaries” display. Paul Wesley has legs the same size, if not smaller than Nina Dobrev. I just wanted to put his display in front of Jared Padalecki’s to measure the difference. There’s a poster from the school mascots (does anyone in Mystic Falls still go to school?). There’s monitors around the displays and you pick up the SoundStick which looks like a Wii controller and listen to the display. Nothing new. It’s just montage footage that the shows use. TVD’s one went on forever! Shit. It made me hate Jeremy even more. For no reason, I just blamed that long montage on Jeremy.

“Babylon 5” costumes

They also showed lulzy footage from the original “V” where Michael Ironside is running and throws himself into a roll for no reason other than to be badass. Then there’s a scene where the evil “V” lady is eating a romantic dinner with her paramour and she goes for the live white mice and he grabs a tarantuala and the camera cuts to them sexily eating incredibly fake white mice and tarantula. There’s also a “Fringe” display featuring John Nobel’s clothes and Anna Torv’s. There’s a display of two globes from the show, one broken to simulate the alternate universe. A toy car of Astrid’s.

They have a lot of stuff from ‘Pretty Little Liars”: dolls that “A” sent, letters, costumes. Some “Gilmore Girl” stuff : Rory’s engagement ring from Dean, clothes. There was a couple who walked in right behind me when I first entered the Paley Center and he asked if he could use his Warner’s pass for a discount. When they came to installation they began talking to two of the employees: both were sent from Warners to work the exhibit. So dude works for Warners and his girlfriend was a former WB employee: she worked on a talk show. And he told her that they have more “Gilmore Girl” stuff on the Warner Ranch or that the house is still there. They were also talking about the VIP WB tour which lasts five to six hours and costs $255. That price gets you into editing bays and production offices.

The piece de’la resistance is the “Smallville” display. On one of the walls is a behind the scene pic of Tom from “Crusade”(?) The entire wall is Tom with his legs up in the air. AS IT SHOULD BE.

It’s this scene but from another angle where you can see the director’s clapboard

But before I get to that: on the side with the TV show theme songs is the “True Blood” display that has a case with the Maened head that Maryann wore, two vials of V that Lafayette sells, fangs belonging to Evan Rachel Wood, the scary doll that Jessica gave to Arlene’s baby, the crystal urn containing Russell’s lover’s organs, the scroll that Eric used to kill Russell’s lover, a ring worn by the Reverend from the Children of the Sun, the couch red sofa belonging to Queen Sophie Anne and the cage she was kept in, as well as the white dress she wore while in the cage.

There’s also the booth that Jerry, Elaine and George always sat in as well as the big salad.

Costumes from the show: Jerry’s jeans and button up, Elaine’s flower dress, the Coat of Many Colors/Pimp Jacket that Kramer wore, and George’s parka and outfit which, next to James Galdofini/Tony Soprano’s robe was the only thing that didn’t seem teeny tiny.

Then there’s a West Wing display with the podium, three suits of Jeb Bartlett, a case with his schedule, a fishtank and other props. In the far back is the Central Perk set from “Friends”. The only stipulations were that you can’t sit in the wooden chair to the left or the two stools in the far right, but you can sit on the couches, pick up the mugs (there’s actually several now as well as magazines for those who want to roleplay).

When the docent was explaining the perimeters to me and mentioned that you couldn’t touch the costumes I said, “You mean I can’t put on the Green Arrow costume? I can’t believe you guys are being sticklers about that. ” Not missing a beat he replied, “I wanted to put on the Wonder Woman one myself but that wouldn’t be good. That’ll probably be weird.”

To the side are props from “The Big Bang Theory”. Outfits from the gang, including Howard’s bright ass blue pants with the Superman buckle,

Though I prefer the cast dressed like this

a wall display of Penny’s hairclips, a drawing of Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) and Penny. There’s Ben McKenzie’s uniform from “Southland”, Sheriff Bullock’s (Timothy Olyphant) uniform from “Deadwood”, a mummified Native American head that belonged to Al Swearegen. An outfit of Edie Falco’s from “The Sopranos” and Tony Soprano’s robe. Costumes from “Two and a Half Men” including the urn containing “Charlie”. Ties and an outfit of Balki’s from “Perfect Strangers”, Urkel’s costume. Costumes from “The Middle” including the Prince William and Kate Middleton commemorative wedding plate from an episode. A “Chuck” display with “Chuck”s uniform and the placards of everyone from the store. Not in this room, but the other are two costumes from “The Drew Carey Show”. His suit and Mimi’s wedding dress.

And finally “Smallville”. Like what’s been posted already to various sites the main item is the costumes of the JLA.

*You couldn’t touch the costumes so no palming the crotches of the display….this time.

The Warner Bros. guy practically ran to the Green Arrow costume. He began taking pictures of it, beaming. When he walked away he said, “I’m so excited about “Arrow” you have no idea.” The only person who is looking forward to “Arrow”…I found him.

The monitor for the display loops the complete season montage that was shown on Comic Con. There’s the box o’ Kryptonite that the Kents kept to keep Clark in check. The one he used in his BDSM games with Lex, Oliver and Rokk Krinn. The Veritas crest, Lana’s engagement ring from Lex, the yearbook in “Homecoming” IIRC, the newspaper article about the Red Blue Blur written by Lois and snapped by Jimmy, Clark’s hollowed out copy of ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” with his Kryptonian key inside. What’s weird is that he pulled out pages 205 to 212. That’s just something I couldn’t get my head around. Was it too thick and that’s why he had to rip those pages out? He’s Clark, he’s superstrong mere paper shouldn’t prove too difficult. Maybe it doesn’t lay right if those pages were still in there and that’s why they’re gone? Seriously, I stood there for a minute staring at the display wondering about that. It’s the little things that stymie me.

Aquaman’s costume is closest to the monitor and it has a bulge so it kept pulling my focus. My eyes would stray from the montage to AC’s junk. Cyborg’s shows are really big but I had a feeling that would be the case for Lee Thompson Young.

His gun should be bigger

From Angie Harmon’s Twitter

Tom’s shows are the dirtiest, with mud clinging to it, which is understandable. What I don’t get is why Impulse’s tiny shoes (and clothes. He’s so wee!) look more worn than anyone elses. Didn’t Kyle only dress up as Impulse twice? What was he getting up to on set?

So it’s a pretty excellent installation. I’m looking forward to what they will put on display in the future.

Here’s the cupcakes you can get for discount when you use your ticket from the exhibition at Sprinkles.

~One of the journalists covering the event tweeted “Where’s Tom Welling”? Earlier that day a woman tweeted that Tom and his himbo friend Gabriel Aubrey were at her job the LA Country Club, the same place where they played the DGA golfing event.

No one asked where Jensen and Jared were either because 1) they didn’t care or 2) they knew SPN was still in production for some reason. They seem behind schedule.

Some journalists ascended on Vancouver and a few made plans to have drinks with Jared while Jensen worked. They also hung out at Misha’s on Sunday. So we at least know Misha is likely finishing out the season.

*I forget what production company made “Dynasty”, but I wish more nighttime soap-ers were there.

Until…

Chaka Khan breaks through the pack!

*Since we’re on things WB related. “Hellcats”star Aly Michalka will have to wait awhile to book her post-“Hellcats” gig. She was recast in the pilot

*Justin Hartley guest starred in “Hart of Dixie” and it was better than I expected! After months of everyone saying that he and Wilson Bethel looked like brothers, it was revealed that Justin’s character Jesse was indeed Wade’s brother! And he had a Southern accent. And he was really good.

The CW held a little Q&A with some of the cast and the showrunners last week and Justin came up. From K-Site TV:

“I’m a big fan,” Gerstein (Leila, show’s creator) said of the man who was once Green Arrow. Cress Williams revealed himself as a Smallville fan, so “it was cool.” (dawnbee: I always knew Cress was cool!)

“And it was nice to have someone who was roughly my height. He actually made me feel small. I went to the gym immediately after,” Williams added.

(dawnybee: Okay, I love that Cress is being self-deprecating but c’mon Cress, let’s not lie about your body. And you have tattoos and that gives you 3 points on the sexy scale so you’ve tipped over the allowable 10 sexy points.)

Wilson Bethel enjoyed working with his co-star, but he did joke about some peculiar behavior. “The only thing that I thought was weird was that he showed up with a bow and arrow. I was like ‘dawg, we don’t roll like that’,” he said."

Last week on Twitter posed a question to Justin. His reply? Classic Justin.

He also tweeted a pic of himself and friends at a wedding

Trying to look casual

~This weekend was a big weekend for music with Coachella and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame taken place. But a non-music event took place, too. The TV Land Awards. The awards which will be televised on the 19th honored the casts of “Laverne and Shirley”, “Murphy Brown”, “One Day at a Time” and “In Living Color”.

”One Day at a Time” cast
*Bonnie Franklin, Pat Harrington, Glenn Scarapelli, Richard Masur and Mackenzie Philips.

*“One Day at a Time” like “Maude” was a show that I watch but knew I didn’t get what was going on. It was so progressive and so grown-up for a sitcom.

*The night’s entertainment was Aretha Franklin and

The B-52’s
*Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider and look great but it’s like time stood still for Keith.

“Laverne & Shirley” cast
Michael McKean, Penny Marshall, Cindy Williams and David L. Landers

David mostly gets around in a wheelchair nowadays, but managed to stand while receiving their award

“Murphy Brown” cast
Grant Shaud, Candice Bergen, Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto, Charles Kimbrough (I wonder if Charles is still married to Beth Howland who played Vera on “Alice”) and creator Diane English. Cast member Robert Pastorelli who played Murphy’s housepainter Eldin died years ago of an overdose.

*I wanted Miles and Murphy to get together so badly but it was a very smart show that didn’t play into those standard tropes of “will they or won’t they”.

“In Living Color” cast
Keenan Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans (who was the show’s DJ and did bit parts), Kim Wayans, Shawn Wayans (wasn’t even on the show. He was too young. He contributed jokes though.), Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh, Kelly Coffield and Jim Carrey with several Fly Girls.

*Kelly is married to another “In Living Color” alumni, Steve Park. He came around the same time as Jamie Foxx, if not before.

Kelly and Steve

Their little ones

Another former costar who wasn’t present was Jamie Foxx. I don’t know if he would’ve attended if he wasn’t do publicity for the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film “Django Unchained”, but I like to think he would.

No, it’s not a film about terrible beards. I get how you would come to that conclusion.

Don’t embarrass yourself by trying to do some special handshake/daps thing, Leo.

“I have one more space in my posse if you’re ever looking to join one. Maybe you can bring Kanye West. I’m thinking about pushing out Kevin Connolly since “Entourage” is off the air. Hit me back. I used that right, right? “Hit me back?”

~I leave you with
“If you’re going to sleep around on me with your Cosmic Casanova, Rokk, whatever the hell, use these. I don’t want you coming back with space worms. That’s a thing, right? Space worms? I bet it is.”
