Comic Con 2011: It Begins....

Jul 20, 2011 12:39

~I misunderstood Jared’s tweet about speaking with Zachary Levi. He’s not going to do the “Chuck” panel as the “Chuck” panel is on Saturday and SPN’s panel is Sunday. Instead he’s going to speak geek for Zach’s side hustle, NerdMachine.com. Jared will do a Q &A late in the afternoon (tix are on sale at the site for $20. Zach is pretty much using Comic Con to get his guests because there will be Q&A’s throughout comic con with the likes of Seth Green, Zachary Quinto, Nathan Fillion, Dule Hill and James Roday of “Psych”, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes as well as Levi himself.

Mark Sheppard has been confirmed for the SPN panel on Sunday alongside the Js, Misha, Jim Beaver, Kripke, Edlund and Gamble.

The “Bones” panel has been scuttled due to both Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz having to pull out for “personal reasons”. David missed their panel a few years ago because he wanted to stay home with his pregnant wife.

*Comic Con is getting even more difficult fancy this year with a new ticket distribution system for events. Instead of having a first-come-first-serve system for signings, Warner Bros. is giving away wristbands via a drawing held at the Sails Pavilion inside the convention center.

Here are the stupid details: Fans interested in attending signings with any of the casts should visit the Sails Pavilion at the time of each drawing. All fans present at the appointed time will receive numbered tickets featuring a special sticker. A random drawing will determine who winds up with a wristband and access to autograph lines.

This stinks because what if you are in a panel during the drawing?

They have also relegated sales of next year passes offsite as well as increasing the price of tickets with the biggest increase going to the four day passes. This year they were increased to $105, next year they will cost $150. It is said this is done to discourage people who only buy the 4-day passes as a placeholder with no intention of going all four days. Now instead of in the Convention Center, pre-registration will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Thursday through Sunday. Only those with 2011 badges can purchase passes for 2012.

*The hotel card keys available.

*I’m hoping some tart doesn’t try to slip Tom Hardy their hotel room key as the lush lipped babe will be on hand for “Warrior” a film about MMA which has absofuckinglutely has nothing to do with comic books or fantasy, but hey, it’s Tom Hardy and they should be happy to get him.

Flex, baby, flex

Tom will no doubt get questions about “The Dark Knight Rises” but he will remain close lipped…ooh, those lips. As I take a breather to quiver and sigh, here are some promo shots for “Warrior”.

I say Got Damn, Tom Hardy

Beyond being chiseled and a bit of rough mixed in with vulnerability, Tom has a great sense of humor. Here he is recounting being “knocked out” by Shia LaBeouf.

Even though the site that did the interview, Den of Geeks, doesn’t seem to get the joke

Tom Hardy, who’s bulked up to play Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, confirmed to us that he got “knocked out” by Shia LaBeouf…
Published on Jul 13, 2011

We're not normally interested in celebrity tittle tattle here on Den Of Geek, but one recent story doing the rounds on Monday really caught our eye. According to several news outlets, Shia LaBeouf (he of Transformers fame) came to blows with actor Tom Hardy on the set of The Wettest County In The World.

In a lengthy interview with Details magazine, LaBeouf said he'd engaged in a tussle with Hardy, and that his opponent "never did that roughhouse stuff with me again."

We recently met with Tom Hardy for a round table interview to promote the forthcoming Warrior, a film about two brothers who fight in a mixed martial arts tournament. We'll be bringing the full transcript of that meeting nearer the movie's release in September, but one thing we can share with you is that Hardy briefly mentioned his encounter with Mr LaBeouf (and this was before LaBeouf's interview came to light).

"I got knocked out by Shia LaBeouf, actually," Hardy said. "In Wettest County, apparently."

At this point, that the atmosphere in the room seemed rather unusual, as though no one involved quite knew whether Hardy was being serious or not. His use of the word ‘apparently' would also suggest that he was winding us up. Nevertheless, Hardy persisted with his version of what happened.

"[It was] behind the scenes," he said, before being almost drowned out by incredulous laughter, both from me and my fellow hacks, and the row of publicists sitting a short distance behind us.

"No, he did," Hardy continued. "He knocked me out sparko. Out cold. He's a bad, bad boy. He is. He's quite intimidating as well. He's a scary dude."

When someone understandably asked Hardy how the fight started, Hardy was less clear.
"He just attacked me," Hardy said, provoking more laughter. "He was drinking moonshine. I was wearing a cardigan, and er, went down. I woke up in Pnut's arms."

To clarify, Pnut (pronounced Peanut) is Hardy's personal trainer. The actor continued, "He was concerned for me. I was like, ‘What was that? It was lightning fast.'" And he said, ‘That was Shia.' I said, ‘Fuckin' hell. Can we go home now?' ‘No, we've still got three weeks to finish.'"

Now, if you've seen Hardy's work in Bronson, or the trailer for Warrior, you'll know that he's a fairly well built chap. Is it likely that LaBeouf (who is, shall we say, rather less well built) really knocked out him out? It's certainly the story that Hardy's going with, even if the way he related it suggested that he had his tongue firmly in his cheek.

~Today’s Hollywood Reporter has a special Comic Con insert which was edited by Jon Favreau to celebrate the kick-off of Comic Con.

Showcasing the poster artistry Drew Struzan

Like idiots they put the address label over the “Avengers” one-sheet

*It also showcased the women of Comic Con.

Anna Torv

“The Secret Circle”s Britt Robertson

“Once Upon a Time”s Jennifer Morrison

Maggie Q

Yvonne Strahovski of “Chuck”

Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Ringer”)

When asked about Wonder Woman and why Hollywood can’t get that project off the ground, the women had this to say.

THR: They tried to do a “Wonder Woman” pilot and it failed

Sarah Michelle Gellar: Don’t’ say failed. That’s not fair to all the people who worked hard on it.

THR: She’s clearly an inspiration. Why can’t they make a movie or TV show that seems to work for modern audiences?

SMG: Female is hard. That’s the thing: there’s a lot of pressure and the box office is still dominated by male-superhero movies, and a lot of times there’s an attitude that Wonder Woman is strong, but Superman would still beat her.

Yvonne S: Maybe the superhero thing is sort of fading out. I feel like all the vampire stuff is moving in, and the fairy-tale stuff now is taking over. I don’t know if it was the right time for Wonder Woman.

: And it doesn’t mean the show wasn’t good. (dawnybee: Except from all reports it wasn’t.)

Maggie: The 1970s Wonder Woman was sort of a kitsch thing. It was a very specific time for that, and it’s hard to modernize something like that. They tried to modernize the outfit, and it’s pretty tough…you can’t have a woman running around in her underwear now. You can’t do that. In the 70s, it was OK. (dawnybee: Since I don’t watch “Nikita” I can’t talk about the many times she’s been shown in bikinis and undressed but I could say I’m sure it’s happened a few times)

SMG: Joss tired Wonder Woman. If there’s anyone who writes female, knows female superheroes and really knows how to make them accessible for everybody, it’s Joss, and he struggled with Wonder Woman, too. So it seems like that is a difficult one to tackle.

THR: Has time passed her by, perhaps?

Jennifer: No, she’ll find her moment. I feel like all of those thigns find their moment. It is just that now it’s not her moment.

Maggie: You know, if it ends with Lynda Carter, so be it. She did it right.

*THR asked some Comic Con newbies and regulars to talk about the event and what they’d do there.

I’d Stand All Day in Line For

Nathan Fillion: “Game of Thrones”. I’d ask “WHYYY? Why, Ned Stark, WHYYY? Like that. It’d be really loud.

Julie Plec (TVD writer/ep): Joss Whedon and Spike and Angel and Natghan Fillion. A joss All-Stars panel, moderated by Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”, “American Dad”)

Darren Criss: “The Hobbit”. For the last season of “Lost”, I waited outside for six or seven hours and slept in the grass.

My Favorite Comic Con Memory Is

Kunal Nayaar (“The Big Bang Theory”) : The comment we get a lot is “You’ve made being a nerd cool. I’m not bullied anymore. When I’m with my people, if I’m wearing Big Bang paraphernalia, people accept me and think I’m awesome.”

Hart Hanson (“Bones” creator): This man in his 30s, wearing an Alienware knapsack, was trotting alongside us trying to talk to me as we were being rushed to an autograph signing. After the signing, I found him outside the double doors and he said, “You are Hart Hanson. I am severely bipolar. What you’ve written many times has cheered me up. And I have not killed myself. That’s all I wanted to tell you.” I’ve never forgotten that.

Ryan Reynolds: A little kid got up and asked me what it felt like to say the Green Lantern oath. I recited it for him and just to see that kid’s face light up like that---not to be too precious about it---was one of those moments where you think “This is really worth all of this.”

What Makes a Kick Ass Comic Con Panel Is

Stephen Lang (“Terra Nova”): It behooves you to show the same kind of passion that the fans have. Be open and be ready to duck in case they throw something.

Loren Bouchard (creator “Bob’s Burgers”) Doing something special. One year, the “King of the Hill” people did a table read, but they read a Law and Order script, which is kind of funny.

Question Best Avoided on a Panel Is
Lucy Lawless (“Xena”, “Spartacus”): Don’t ask us to come down and kiss your kids. Don’t ask us for a hug. Stop that---I’m all out of hugs. And no dates; I’m not available for dates. And please stop getting full-color tattoos of Xena and her horse on your back.

Joel McHale (“Community”) : “Will you come to my barbecue? We’ll all be dressed as Shrek.”

My Dream Panel Includes:

Zachary Levi: I’d like to see everyone who’s ever played Batman, going back to Adam West. (dawnybee: That’s a cool idea. I’d do the same for Supermans.

Joel McHale: Han Solo, Michael Jordan, Gollum, Rainbow Brite, whoever the lead guy from Splinter Cell: Conviction is, the new Ghost Recon soldier and the female leader of Germany. Plus Nicki Minaj and Edgar Wright.

Nathan Fillion: Indiana Jones, Han Solo, two or three Doctor Whos, Captain Kirk and a couple of Ensigns from “Star Trek” that died.

Jonah “Jonathan” Nolan (writer of “Person of Interest”, “The Dark Knight”, bro of Christopher): Bela Lugosi, Klaus Kinski and Chewbacca.

If I Could Be a Showrunner On Another Series I’d Run

Marti Noxon: I would love to see Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd from “Modern Family” go run “Mad Men” for an episode. I want to see Jon Hamm as a sitcom dad.

Jeff Pinker (“Lost”, “Fringe”, EP): “Justified”. I’d find a way to bring back Margo Martindale and M.C Gainey back and put them in scenes together. We’ve brought characters back from the dead before.

Julie Plec: I would choose “Glee” over anything. I’d also pop over to “Nikita” and have Nikita take on Klaus for a “Vampire Diaries”-“Nikita” crossover episode.

Manny Coto (EP, “Dexter”): Three things I would do for “Game of Thrones” would be a) not kill Sean Ban; b) not kill Sean Bean; and c) get winter here a little sooner.

Kevin Williamson (EP, “The Vampire Diaries”): I want to tackle a procedural. An adult drama or another genre show, maybe sci-fi. “The Faculty” is as close to sci-fi with the aliens. I’d like to dabble in that again. (dawnybee: I added his comment because I love “The Faculty”. This is a film that needs a cast commentary on the DVD.)

The Show I”d Most Like to Reboot Is

Craig Silverstein (“Nikita”): “Quantum Leap”. It’s one of the best story vehicles I’ve ever seen.

Have You Ever Dressed In Costume to Avoid Fans

Nathan Filliion: I once tried wearing a mask so I could go explore the convention fllor, and it got so hot and really sweaty. It was a featureless black mesh-type mask that covered my face (dawnybee: In case we didn’t know that masks are used to cover faces) It was an Evil Jawa kind of hood. I scared the crap out of Neil Patrick Harris. If I were to do it again, it’d be something grand, with space to carry comics, posters and jackets. Id’ go as Boba Fett with some kind of cooling system, and his rocket pack would be my backpack.

Nina Dobrev: If I had an unlimited budge, I would hire a team to make me Mystique from “X-Men: First Class” -the same people who did Jennifer Lawrence.

Julie Plec: I ‘d probably have to go with Buffy’s Willow. Not Bad Willow but dorky Willow because I know I definitely have plenty of dorky patterned sweater vests in my closet.

Joel McHale: I could go in my Jeff Winger costume, or Id’ go as Rob Corddry from “Children’s Hospital” or Sean Bean’s character in “Game of Thrones”, or anybody from “The Vampire Diaries”. Name a character, and I’m in.

Jonah Nolan: For a “Dark Knight” viral gag, I ditched my Stormtrooper mask and painted my face up as The Joker and went running around the streets of San Diego with a few other kids for a few hours.

Stephen Lang: I would probably dress up as Papa Smurf.

I used to do that occasionally for my kids. I had a big beard back then, and I’d put on one of my wife’s nightgowns, did a Kiehl’s blue facial mask and put a pair of white BVDs on my head. I looked a dead ring for Papa Smurf. I’m sure I’m going to regret having told you that, but that’s probably who I would go as.

Nestor Carbonell (“Lost”, “Ringer”) : Captain Jack Sparrow---I wouldn’t need the eyeliner.

David Greenwalt (EP, “Angel”, “Grimm”): I’d go as an aging David Boreanaz.

Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica, “True Blood”) recounted how she went as Hit Girl from “Kick Ass” in 2010. After the “True Blood” panel she would change back into it and go to panels she and her boyfriend were into. People were asking for her picture because she was dressed as Hit Girl, not knowing she really was.

Here’s dear huge eyed Elijah Wood, star of “Wilbur” and forever Frodo, talking about Comic Con.

Elijah Wood
Geek Cred: The Lord of the Rings
Upcoming: The Hobbit
Comic-Con panel: Wilfred, Thursday, July 21, 6:15-7:30 p.m., Room 6A

THR: What stands out from your Comic-Con experiences?

Wood: My first Comic-Con was before the first Lord of the Rings was released and I could actually walk the floor. I’m a nerd at heart and love collectible toys and comic art and all of the different elements that come together at the convention. There was a sense of excitement about Rings and there was a predominant feeling that we were unleashing something that Comic-Con people would be excited about. I was there with folks from WETA Digital and it was fun to share that experience with a number of Rings technicians. It was like a portion of the New Zealand family had infiltrated San Diego.

THR: How has your experience changed over the years?

Wood: It became very apparent that I couldn’t realistically walk around, which was a bummer. I loved the festival so much and it was a shame to realize I couldn’t enjoy it. I’ve always wanted to get a mask or costume to walk around in. It’s probably the only place if you want to enjoy a festival where, if you wear a costume or a mask, it’s completely normal.

THR: What would your costume be?

Wood: I'm going to Comic-Con for a Wilfred panel, so it might be the year that I get my shit together, get a mask and walk around. Initially my plan was to do a Stormtrooper costume. But I’m downgrading it straight to a mask because the full costume would get too hot. I think Simon Pegg walked around once with a Joker mask on, too.

THR: What’s your favorite Comic-Con memory?

Wood: I ran into Patton Oswalt, which was very exciting. I think he’s hilarious. He’s kind of like Simon Pegg -- in an elite group of super-nerds. He introduced a panel and I met him backstage. And I was lucky enough to see James Cameron and Peter Jackson’s panel last year really resonated with me.

THR: What panel would you stand in line all day to see?

Wood: If they did a panel for Batman, which I don’t think they’re going to do, I’d stand in line for that. I think Chris Nolan’s Batman series is exceptional and I’m excited to see how he’s going to tie it up. If there was a panel for that with some kind of information as to what the next film’s going to be, I would stand in line for that.

THR: Who would be on your dream panel?

Wood: George Lucas and Gary Kurtz, his main producer for Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars, who ultimately did not produce Return of the Jedi. Their vision of Star Wars diverted: The vision that his producer had is very much in line with the vision that his fans have and I’d love to see a panel them discussing those specific points. It wasn’t supposed to be Ewoks, it was supposed to be Wookies; I think the Ewok choice was more about marketing to children. I would love to see that panel; it would never happen, but it would just be so amazing.

THR: What tips do you have for Comic-Con first-timers?
Wood: I like staying away from the Convention Center so I’m not right in the middle of it. It’s nice to get a breather otherwise you feel like you’re living at the Convention Center.

THR: You’re there this year for FX’s dark comedy Wilfred -- are you prepared for Lord of the Rings questions?

Wood: That and Hobbit questions I’m more than prepared for. I’m used to it at this point. Especially there; that environment is so conducive to asking about those particular projects. It’s totally to be expected.

THR: What can you tease about Wilfred?

Wood: I’m really excited to see where the show goes; the guest stars are amazing: Dwight Yoakum is in a lot of episodes; Mary Steenburgen plays my mom and we’ve got Rashida Jones and Ed Helms. They only serve to elevate the work that we’re doing.

*The premiere of “Captain America: The First Avengers” was held yesterday at The El Capitan Theatre; quaint theatre, really small and I don’t get why Disney held such a big deal premiere at that tiny a** theatre even if they own it.

The Avengers came out to support their leader.

Also on hand was Vanessa Hudgens who hasn’t met a camera/red carpet she didn’t love.

She says she cut her own hair. It looks like it. Love the dress though.

Natalie Domer of “The Tudors”. She’s just been cast in “Game of Thrones” for next season

”Thor”s Jamie Alexander

I love her style

I was wondering if Jamie was still friends with her “Kyle XY” costar Matt Dallas.

Turns out they are. He was at the premiere of “Thor”.

Chris Evans may be buff, but dear heart is still vulnerable. He’s talked about having to go into therapy after taking on the role out of a fear of failure and how his fellow Avengers had his back.

I went [to a therapist] because I was very apprehensive about taking the movie,” Evans explained. “I was nervous about a lifestyle change. I was nervous about a commitment to six movies [three Captain Americas, three Avengers] … so when I finally decided to do it, I said, “I’ll do it, but I gotta fix my brain.” Evans found therapy to be helpful, even though he didn’t experience any dramatic epiphanies. “It’s not that there were giant breakthroughs, like Good Will Hunting hugging moments,” he joked. “It’s just nice talking. It’s amazing the amount of things you can just take on and keep to yourself.”

Mr. Evans said he was relieved that “The Avengers” did not rest solely on his shoulders yet felt nervous about working alongside Marvel veterans like Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the secret agent Nick Fury, and Robert Downey Jr., the star of the blockbuster “Iron Man” movies.

Mr. Downey was an early supporter of Mr. Evans, having quietly lobbied Mr. Evans’s agent to keep him from passing on “Captain America.”

“I did the Eastern medicine approach,” Mr. Downey explained. “Rather than apply direct pressure, I went to the furthest meridian point.”

The challenges that Mr. Evans faces, Mr. Downey said, are familiar to the profession and all too real: to reconcile his background as an “almost blue-collar Boston Joe” with his Hollywood trajectory; to see “Captain America” keep pace with the successes of “Iron Man” and “Thor”; and to measure up to his acting idols, a feeling Mr. Downey vividly remembered from making the 1989 drama “True Believer” with James Woods. (“If he told me to go eat the camera lens,” Mr. Downey said of Mr. Woods, “I would have.”)
But Mr. Evans will work through these issues, Mr. Downey said, because “he has the main tool, the main arrow in his quiver already, and it’s that he’s communicative.” He added: “How do we all manage our anxiety? By not keeping it a secret.”

Chris Hemsworth, the “Thor” star who was a relative unknown before his Marvel debut became a $400 million worldwide hit this spring, said he and Mr. Evans had talked about their anxiety issues on the “Avengers” set.

“We make the assumption,” Mr. Hemsworth said, “that no one else is going through what we are, and I said, ‘Of course everyone does.’ But any kind of courage or bravery is not about being fearless. It’s about doing it despite the fear.”

From his therapy sessions Mr. Evans learned that “it is really good just to talk about what you’re struggling with,” he said. “It’s not like I had any massive breakthrough, but for some reason this feels more manageable.”

But have no illusions that anything other than “Captain America” - and a desire not to bungle the handoff to “The Avengers” - will be on Mr. Evans’s mind for the next several weeks. If “Captain America” is a dud, he will be disappointed. And if it succeeds, the next 10 years of his career might be spoken for, and that could be the bigger problem.

“It’s nice job security, but it doesn’t give a whole lot of freedom,” he said. “That’s the compromise, and it’s worth it. These are good problems to be having. It’s not like, poor me, I’m working in the coal mines.”

~I talked to a reviewer and she says “Captain America” is fun, “Cowboys and Aliens” is good, not great. Normally I don’t listen to reviewers but she and I share the same taste it seems. We both hated “Priest”, she loves “Game of Thrones”, like me she can’t get into or understand the appeal of “Entourage” and we both hated Nia Vardalos’ “My Life in Ruins”. So there may be something there.

These are my heroes whether the DCnU treats them right or not

… and Jean Smart will appear in a multi-arc. Smart was killed off on “Hawaii 5-0” at the end of last season. Replacing her as the Governor will be handsome, great dresser Richard T. Jones of “The Sarah Conner Chronicles”.

Before he was just the hot actor from “The Brothers” and “Girlfriends” now he is known for giving the worst commencement speech ever. Jones was asked by the University of Maryland to give a speech and apparently he tried to wing it (others say he was just nervous and forgot his notes) and it went viral.

I haven’t the heart to watch it

*James Wolk (the very excellent star of last year’s first casualty “Lone Star”) will appear in multiple episodes of “ Shameless” on Showtime. He will play Adam, an investment executive who makes a connection with Fiona (Emmy Rossum)>

*Ted Danson is replacing Laurence Fishbourne on “CSI”. He’ll still continue on HBO’s “Bored to Death”

Good on ya, Ted!

I hope he and Mary Steenburgen continue to make time for each other

*With the news that an online distribution company, Prospect Park, will put “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” on their website with new episodes, this news is lackluster. But two more alumnus are returning to Pine Valley. Justin Bruening and his wife Alexa Havins who played Jamie Martin and Babe respectively.

The question now is who of the two shows will actually return to a web only series. Michael E. Knight who has played Tad Martin for an eternity will not make the transition and no word yet if Susan Lucci will. To use a term I hate and think is played out, which still doesn’t stop me from using it: this is a game changer. Can an established TV show make the transition to the Internet?

As much as performers are making arguments for web content and that it gives ownership to the talent, I think the thinking is inherently flawed when you have more than a few webseries who reach out to fans to fund the project. Misha Collins’ web series with friends have been funded by fans; Book Club the Series that features Callum Blue has stalled out after one episode because they still need to raise funding. Felicia Day has done pitches over Twitter for donations and the series’ creators have made videos asking for money. So hate the game, but everyone knows it’s best to not dip into your own pockets to fund a project. They still need the deep pockets and you don’t get that kind of investment without the person holding the purse strings wanting to give their input.
