SDCC: The Countdown...

~A very happy belated, much belated birthday to gadsten, friend in fandom and beyond and one of the reason why I have an LJ to even post to (stepn2itc, dragged me out of Yahoo Groups to join the New Age and gadsten created my page).

Our friendship is as enduring as.

~There’s finally something to distract from all the Comic Con talks. The nominations for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. A lot of returning nominees, a few choice new ones and HBO continues to trounce other pay cable channels.

Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights

*With the show ending, the cast and crew reflects on the show. Peter Berg recalls when Kyle Chandler was suggested as a lead, showing why I love him so much. For speaking his mind, not for not liking “Early Edition”. That show was great.

Berg: I said, "Kyle Chandler?" I only knew him from [late-'90s CBS drama] Early Edition. I was not a fan of that show, and I was not a fan of Kyle Chandler.

Berg: I was really worried. Connie and Kyle developed a very flirtatious, precocious relationship right off the bat. And Kyle, of course, is married. They announced they were going to drive to Austin together from L.A. to move out, and I threw myself in front of that bus. I said it was a horrible idea for multiple reasons. They ignored me. Connie dismissively told me she knew what she was doing and she didn't need my advice. I was convinced they would be having some torrid affair by the time they reached Santa Fe and Kyle's marriage would be over by the time they got to Austin. I was wrong about that, thank God.

”Friday Night Lights” goodbye

Lead Actress in a Drama
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Mireille Enos, The Killing
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Kathy Bates, Harry’s Law

Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Chris Colfer, Glee

*The day before his nomination an interview with Ryan Murphy detailing his plans to have the cast graduate at the end of this season and that the cast wasn’t returning for S4, but he named Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Colfer specifically. Lea tweeted that it was all good, the rumor was that Cory had no idea about this plan and that he only found out from his manager when Hollywood Reporter ran the story and Colfer says he found out on Twitter.

Says Chris: “ "I didn't necessarily know that it was going to be our last season next year. I knew something like that was coming up eventually. I mean, we can't be there forever. I don't necessarily want to leave so soon,". "But, I mean, it's fine. It's what it is. And all things come to an end."

But Colfer will be fine. He wrote two kids’ book, he sold a pilot to the Disney Channel derived from the book and he’ll star in a film he wrote titled “Struck By Lightning” which costars Dermont Mulrooney, Alison Janney, Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” (the daughter with the big eyes) and Christina Hendricks. The film centers on a boy (Colfer) who is “struck and killed by lightning, and in flashbacks he chronicles his exploits as he blackmails his fellow classmates into contributing to his literary magazine.

Supporting Actor in a Drama
John Slattery, Mad Men
Andre Braugher, Men of a Certain Age (dawnybee: Make that the just cancelled, “Men of a Certain Age”)
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (dawnybee: Hells yeah!)
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Walton Goggins, Justified (* Walt’s reaction to EW
Walton gives his reaction to the nomination)

From THR: "I'm over the moon. I'm going to celebrate by taking my little boy to three different L.A. parks and playing with every single toy in his box. It'll be Goggins Blanket Time for the next ten hours. And tonight I'm going to get together with some of these people I get to see every day we shoot and hug as many of them as I possibly can. The biggest surprises [in the Emmys]? I think my name is the biggest surprise. Johnny Galecki is one of my best friends and I just jumped up and down when I saw his name. I came to L.A. when I was 19, with $300 in my pocket. L.A. has a reputation that is trite and boring. But for me this city is so special. It's given me the love of my life, my son, too many great friends to count on ten hands, and an opportunity to participate in a career that has fundamentally changed me as a person. And I'm grateful to this city. I really am."

Supporting Actress in a Comedy
Jane Lynch, Glee
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland (dawnybee: Nod for continuing her “it’s funny because she’s old and being inappropriate” schtick)
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live (dawnybee: I think she’s coasting off the success of “Bridesmaids” because she hasn’t been funny on SNL for some time now and the show itself has been unfunny even longer.)

Supporting Actress in a Drama
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
Michelle Forbes, The Killing
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
Margo Martindale, Justified (dawnybee: It was written in the stars. This will go to her.)

Joan Cusack, Shameless (dawnybee: If there was any justice it’d go to her. She’s shines on this show)

Julia Stiles, Dexter (dawnybee: If it doesn’t go to Cusack, it should go to Stiles. Her arc was wonderful.)

Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Jeremy Davies, Justified (dawnybee: Hmmmm. I guess.)
Michael J. Fox, The Good Wife
Robert Morse, Mad Men
Bruce Dern, Big Love
Beau Bridges, Brothers and Sisters (dawnybee: If he gets it it’s because they overlooked him for his nominated episode of “Desperate Housewives”)

Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Elizabeth Banks, 30 Rock
Dot-Marie Jones, Glee
Kristin Chenoweth, Glee
Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live
Cloris Leachman, Raising Hope
Gwyneth Paltrow, Glee

Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live (dawnybee: Keeping in line with ‘Giving Caesar his due; I find him to be a big tool, but JT is excellent on SNL. They tend to give him great stuff to work with and his episodes are usually the best ones of the season, but not this time. I think it was his worst appearance and I don’t know if it’s a further example at just how unfunny SNL is or that he doesn’t try anymore. I saw “Bad Teacher” I found his performance to be more of the same. I don’t know if I can endure “Friends With Benefits” to see if he gives a different performance in that.)

Will Arnett, 30 Rock
Nathan Lane, Modern Family
Zach Galifianakis, Saturday Night Live
Matt Damon, 30 Rock (dawnybee: I saw this ep. He was really funny. Another winning guest role like the one he did on “Will and Grace”)

Idris Elba, The Big C (dawnybee: Look at Dris! Two noms.)

What did Dris have to say about his nomination?

Idris: "This has been such an amazing morning for me! I am extremely honored to be nominated in two categories. Luther has been such a passion project for me and working on The Big C was a great time. Also, my daughter told me I am going to be as famous as the guy from Twilight.”

There you go. Idris Akuna Elba will be more famous than the guy from “Twilight”. He’s way more attractive IMO.

His dad Winston and daughter Isan are surely proud

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or A Movie
Evan Rachel Wood, Mildred Pierce
Dame Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey
Mare Winningham, Mildred Pierce
Eileen Atkins, Upstairs, Downstairs

Melissa Leo, Mildred Pierce (dawnybee: Not having seen Mildred Pierce, I’m not sure if she deserves it or not but I have a feeling she won’t win because people remembers her terrible Oscar speech.)

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or A Movie
Guy Pearce, Mildred Pierce
Paul Giamatti, Too Big to Fail
James Woods, Too Big to Fail
Brian F. O'Byrne, Mildred Pierce
Tom Wilkinson, The Kennedys (dawnybee: My favorite actor. He deserves any and all accolades.)

Reality Program
Antiques Roadshow
Deadliest Catch
Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List
MythBusters
Undercover Boss
Hoarders (dawnybee: Hoarders has replaced “Intervention” as the best trainwrecky show. Next awards season “My Strange Addiction” should be on this list. Have you seen this mess? Two women who are addicted to eating detergent. One sits on her couch chomping it down like it’s popcorn. Another person is addicted to eating toilet tissue. Another eats the stuffing from her couch cushions but she goes the extra route of rolling it in dirt then consuming it.)

Reality Competition
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing With The Stars
Project Runway
So You Think You Can Dance
Top Chef

Host of a Reality Program or Competition
Phil Keoghan, The Amazing Race
Ryan Seacrest, American Idol
Tom Bergeron, Dancing With The Stars
Cat Deeley, So You Think You Can
Jeff Probst, Survivor

*There’s been articles about snubs this year and the critics seem to think Nick Offerman of “Parks and Recreation” has been robbed, John Noble of “Fringe”, “Fringe” itself and Emilie Clark’s Daenerys omission to be a mistake. As well as Danny Pudi of “Community” and the show itself.

I know, Abed. I know.

My biggest disappointment was not seeing Sean Bean nominated. It’s beyond me how Ned Stark who is the center on which the show fragments off from is not nominated. So principled, so good. I think Sean took a character that could read as boring on the page and imbued him what those qualities that he was supposed to have and made him fully fleshed. But I think, just as Emilie’s omission and I’d even say Lena Headey’s omission, that it’s hard to judge it by one or three reels. With Dinklage it’s like shooting fish and a barrel. When didn’t Tyrion have a great scene?

*Jason Momoa won no accolades but I’m pretty sure GoT has widened his fan base considerably. He’ll need that support when his take on Conan the Barbarian comes to theaters this summer.

I think my Great Khali just knocked me up with this look

Emmys, schmemmys, look at all this hotness, son! Even in ugly pants.

More TV Talk

*”Breaking Bad” returned with lauds from critics. It seems that every reviewer loved its return.

For the return you can track the season using the handy dandy “Breaking Bad” bingo card

As well as read Giancarlo Espisito talking the premiere
and show’s creator, the brill Vince Gilligan talk about this season. this seasone and
the new season’s premieree

*The producers of “90210” is saying “hold up, wait a minute” at all this talk of Trevor Donovan not returning for their fourth season. It turns out Trevor is in the Misha Collins and Chord Overstreet realm where he has been demoted to recurring status. “90210”s TPTB said to TV Guide, “I just think the studio's concern is that it's hard to service that number of characters in every episode, and we understand that, but we had such great stories for everyone and so we're not losing any cast members.”

So it seems budgetary because Trevor certainly wasn’t in every episode last season, but he was a regular so he got paid regardless. The problem with their stand is that Trevor himself tweeted that he was leaving after a few episodes.

The kids of West Bev (and their older, really older, I mean OLD friend) is back to work.

Hang loose, Old Man Teddy

Do you know how much I want someone to do that to Annie?

*Tristan was asked by Cosmo UK to do their spread for Prostate Cancer awareness. Other young actors who have done so is Sean Faris, Evil Twin, Shawn Ashmore and Sam Page.

Werk it, Tristan

West Bev has also acquired young!Papa Winchester. Matt Cohen has replaced Drew Seeley (Zac Efron’s singing voice in the first “High School Musical”) as Jeremy in a number of episodes this season. The audition for “90210” is what prohibited Matt from joining Misha Collins in Haiti. When he didn’t get the gig he was even more bummed that it was for naught. So lady luck hasn’t turned her back on Matt even though she really likes it doggy style.

He’s a newlywed, Misha. His balls belong to his wife now.

Misha is no stranger to asphyxiation, bruv

Of course the boys of SPN are back on set. I don’t believe Misha has gone to set yet since they are shooting out of order. The Jensen “Does This Everything On Me Make Me Look Fat” Ackles directed episode, episode 7 is the first one shot.

“Just send him this text right here. See what he thinks about that.”

”Dude, you can’t just text me something like that and expect me to go back to work. Now all I can think about is you sucking my cook. I’m assuming you meant something else. Autofill is a pain in the ass. Or maybe you really want to do my nutritionist. Go to your trailer I’ll meet you there. And try not to look like you’re expecting to get boned.”

Fail!

*AOL TV talked to Misha about his and his Minions trip to Haiti Using his evol for good

*The much ballyhooed “Dallas” revival is ready to go. The site is live complete with cast photos. It’s pretty much a “Desperate Housewives” reunion with Jesse Metcalfe (who played Eva Longoria’s lover), Josh Hutchinson (nephew of Nicolette Sheridan’s character) and Brenda Strong (narrator Mary Alice) starring alongside “Dallas” OGs Linda Gray, Patrick Duffy and Larry Hagman.

Tool Squared

*Matthew Gray Gubler recounts his “Celebrity Ghost Stories”. I watch it on occasion but I hate it because all of the stories seem so fake. It’s like the producers said, “Tell a ghost story and make it believable.” It’s just too over-elaborate in storytelling. The one with Barry Williams (Greg, “The Brady Bunch”) went on forever like he was striving to make it seem real. I guess if someone asked me to recount a ghost story it’d be just as dry and inplausible.

Cool story bro moment: My old apartment building The Langham” here in L.A is rumored to be haunted and they shot at least two episodes of “Criminal Minds” there. In the episode where Elle leaves the team it served as her apartment building (she walks out and dumps her gun in the trash can as Hotch is parked across the street.) and in the episode where Hotch is attacked by Foyet it serves as Hotch’s apartment where Prentiss goes to investigate. The interior shot of her walking the hall up to his door is The Langham, inside, it’s most definitely not. I wish that apartment was that big.

~Comic Con is in a few days and the full sked is up.

The big focus has been on the film properties that will be on hand and who’s sitting it out. It was initially reported that Marvel Studios (the movie side, the comics side will have a presence in an array of panels) was all but sitting this SDCC out, instead saving their wares like “The Avengers” teaser footage and “The Amazing Spiderman” for D23, the Disney expo that is held in Anaheim in August but that turned out to be false. Although they won’t have anything in Hall H, there will be a big “The Avengers” presence on the floor and there is a Sony Pictures panel which the Spiderman reboot, “The Amazing Spiderman”, will be featured.

The panel on Friday, July 22nd will feature director Marc Webb and the film’s stars Andrew Garfield (Tony Perkins look-alike of “The Social Network”) and Emma Stone (“Easy A”, “Zombieland”).

Pre-Spidey body. Tiny legs? Check. Humongous head? Check plus.

Andrew in Maui winning the Rising Star award at the Maui Film Fest

With “The Social Network”costar Max Minghella, Max’s girlfriend Kate Mara (sister of TSN Rooney Mara) and “Tron Legacy”s Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde

Andrew and his big head/hair as Peter Parker and with his Mary Jane, Emma Stone from Entertainment Weekly’s issue about “The Amazing Spiderman”

With costars Martin Sheen and Sally Fields

“The Amazing Spiderman” panel is part of Sony’s package of panels that include the “Total Recall” remake starring Colin Farrell taking over Arnold Schwarzenagger’s role,

Colin with son Henry

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston and fizzine John Cho. It’s directed by Beckinsale’s husband Len Wiseman; “30 Minutes or Less” starring Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”) as a pizza delivery guy who is kidnapped by two guys (comedian Nick Swardson and Danny McBride (“Eastbound and Down”, “Tropic Thunder”) and forced to rob a bank. He enlists his ex-best friend (Aziz Ansari “Parks and Recreation”) and comedy ensues. Possibly. Sony also brings the sequel to “Ghost Rider” , “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” because burning their money with a flame thrower isn’t entertaining enough. On hand for the panel will be directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (“Crank” and “Jonah Hex” so you know this will stink like garbage on a 114 degree day) and Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba (who is too good, too hot for this mess), and Johnny Whitworth.

Idris will be busy because he will also do Legendary Pictures’ Pre-Production panel for “Pacific Rim”, a monster film directed by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Idris, Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”).

*On the TV side, shows are adding to their panels. Alexander Skarsgard is now confirmed for the “True Blood” panel; Danica McKellar (Winnie, “The Wonder Years”) will attend the “Young Justice” panel for the Cartoon Network. She voices Miss Martian. Anthony Stewart Head (Giles, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) who was already on board for the “Merlin” panel is doing mod duties for the “Grimm” panel. The showrunners for “Grimm” are Buffy and Angel executive producers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf.

Jared Padalecki announced over Twitter that he was asked by Zachary Levi to speak at the “Chuck” panel. In case you think “Huh??” each time there’s some TV Guide competition the SPN, SV and “Chuck” fans go head to head-with SPN trouncing them each time. But in times of Twitter trends, each fandom helps the other out.

*Jared talks Comic Con and his favorite character

“Smallville” alums will be on hand. AlMiles will be there for the “Charlie’s Angels” panel, Jeph Loeb will be on multiple panels, Tyler Posey (“Subterranean”) will be there for the “Teen Wolf” panel, Alison Scaggliotti (Wonder Twin Jan, “Idol”) for “Warehouse 13” (no word if new “Warehouse 13” cast member Good Twin Ashmore will attend), Emmanuelle Vaugier (Helen Bryce) will be on the panel for SyFy’s “Lost Girl”. Sarah Carter (Alicia) and former SV scribe Mark Verheiden will attend for “Falling Skies” (I’m guessing Greg Beeman will attend as well but just hasn’t confirmed).Sam Witwer will be on the “Being Human” panel,

Speaking of “Being Human”. Here’s Aidan Turner, the dearly departed Mitchell as a dwarf in “The Hobbit”

Aidan’s former costar Russell Tovey is getting hairy during his break.

And doing the tourist thing at Buckingham Palace

And my nemesis Steven DeKnight will be on hand to for the “Spartacus” panel and to introduce new lead Liam McIntyre.

Next to the chance to see grown folks dressed like Pokemon, Comic Con is all about the swag. FOX has offered up their SDCC posters.

Many are just repurposed Fall preview material

I liked this one though

“Regular Show” signing, 1:45 p.m.

*Outside of the film and TV properties are panels that goes to the heart and intent of Comic Con in the first place: comics and the people that love them.

There’s the annual Black Panel. This year they will celebrate the life and work of the late, great Dwayne McDuffie, reuniting his partners in Milestone Comics.

Here’s the tribute that Comic Con International nixed for inclusion in their magazine.

There’s Comic Book Law School 202: When Hollywood Takes a Shining which addresses ownership rights for creators. This is an especially hot topic with the unending battle between DC Comics and the estate of Superman creators Siegel and Shuster.

DC Comics will have a couple of panels outlining their new 52, the relaunch which will change the DCU for a new generation, as well as specialized panels for Superman and Batman and what this relaunch will mean for them and the debut of the animated film: “Batman: Year One”.

Marvel is holding a “Year of the X-Men” panel to discuss the changes within the X-Men Universe; ”That 70’s Panel” that discusses the Bronze era of comics and the new voices it championed. The Shonen Jump Panel for those interested in becoming Manga creators.

The 24th annual ”Gays in Comics” about the industry frontlining gay characters. The panel is followed by a mixer/social.

”Her Universe: What Women Want in Their Female Sci-Fi Heroes”, a panel which poses the question “How do you create truly interesting and unique female characters in the sci-fi universe?” Amongst the panelist is my fave SV writer/Batgirl writer Bryan Q. Miller. Also on the panel is prolific comic writer Gail Simone who is replacing Bryan on the Batgirl title.

*dawnybee: I like Simone’s work and as one of the most prolific and popular female comic writers today I applaud her work, but I wish she could shut up about how great Miller’s run on Batgirl was because it makes him being yanked off the title and them giving the persona back to Barbara Gordon hurt all the more.

I just picked up Miller’s second-to-last Batgirl and what has made him so great with this run, well one of the things because there are many, is that he incorporates other characters within the young superhero universe so organically. It’s not like he’s just going through a Bucket List like Slavkin/Swimmer/Souders and Peterson did on “Smallville” and trying to force storylines so that he can use these characters, but make it seem that it’s a foregone conclusion that Stephanie knows these people and would call on them when need be. There’s no need for intricate plotting of “Oh, I met this person because of this scenario”. I love when writers just make it known that characters do circle each other’s orbit.

Like in this awesome panel from Supergirl #23.

Steph calling on her gals

Girl Power for real

A very important and vital panel where I hope it’s just preaching to the choir. I hope all fans come together and educate themselves on the issue of representation. It’s been a problem within DC Comics with their characters and it doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon despite their vow to add more diversity to the JLA.
