Smallville: Going....

May 10, 2011 03:52

The series finale for “Smallville” is bearing down on us. If there’s one time I would love for the CW to pre-empt the show it’s now. It’s too soon! To quote Legolas “For me the grief is still to near.”

I want everything to be new to me on the night of the finale so I’ve avoided promos and most interviews, I want to go in with fresh eyes so I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot of stuff, but thankfully others are sharing info.

*tariel22 posted scans of TV Week’s interview with Tom and the other cast members
*I have been seeking the Variety celebrating “Smallville”s 100th episode. I tore apart my closets looking for it when suddenly on Friday I remembered I had it in under my desk at work. I was looking specifically for the one sheet listing the 100 episodes. Back when the 100th issue hit I didn’t know about thumbnails so I reduced it all to hell and was looking for the original. For some odd reason it’s not in the Variety! There are no pages torn out but I swore it was in that issue.

But necessity is the mother of all invention so I

*I had really hoped that the CW/Warners Bros. would put out another thank you like this one for the 200th episode. These are all of the guest stars from the 100th episodes (as well as cast in crew). It’s great seeing people who ended up returning post 100 in different roles (Adrian Holmes and Michael Daingerfield).

I was at the Paley Center for Media over the weekend and I watched the SV Paley Fest and Tom said that his first day on set he went to the hair and makeup trailer and asked “Where do I go?” He was lost and didn’t know what to do and he decided then and there that in order for him to get through he would ask for help. He said that he couldn’t do it alone, he couldn’t do it without the cast and the crew’s help. Looking at this immense list-- which is not even the full scope of the universe for that show on and offscreen-- is staggering. The fact that so many people speak with such respect and awe over that “well oiled machine” is a testament to their work ethics and their personalities.

~SV eppy recaps:

Dominion

This episode had Tom and Justin in gladiator gear and Callum Blue squirming around in his throne like he was hard from watching Clark wrestling with another guy,

… what is there not to love about this episode? A lot of people and myself joked around that it was “Smallville: Blood and Sand”, but it’s a million times better than DeKnight’s “Spartacus” (says the woman who has only seen a few minutes of its pilot but has hated DeKnight for seemingly an eternity). Being “Smallville”, filled with fetching folks it was more like “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” mixed with Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” .

Can we get Oliver in some chaps please?

Christina Aguilera - Dirrty (Uncensored) by kratosx

What I Loved

*Justin did an excellent job at the helm. It’s very different hard to direct action scenes and he didn’t wonderfully well at it. And more importantly he framed Tom perfectly. I mean, Tom makes it easy for him because

Just look at him!

But Justin knows what to focus on and Tom got some good facetime. I just may have I loved seeing Clark on his knees with a blade to his chest, so submissive to Zod; bloodied but unbowed, but more importantly on his knees..bloodied…bound.

*Callum Blue was stupendous! I loved Callum as Zod in season 9 and I know he wasn’t everyone’s cuppa and his way of speaking turned people off, but I loved everything about him in S9. It’s so heartening to have read the responses of people who weren’t fans of him in S9 actually say that they liked his performance in this episode. He did superb and he looked damn good,

… it was a win all the way around for Callum. This time Zod was more precise and focused, not as finessed but he didn’t need finesse at this point. This is Zod about business. He’s not into cajoling and thinking that would do the trick, he’s still a master manipulator. He’s not just going to kill when one defy him and disrespect his title, oh no, he’ll kill because it is his wont to do. It’s folly on top of giving a message to the masses. Just as Clark has found himself, Zod has found thanks to merging with Phantom Zod.

Matter of fact the performances all around were great (Oliver showing cracks of vulnerability when Zod questions what Clark’s reaction would be if he found out he was marked made me really feel for him. He just wants to be loved by Clark!). It was a terrific script, great direction (even though the solar flares was like being in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood video) and acting it was a delight. The part where Zod questions if Clark is Cain or Abel and Clark says, “Well I’d never murder you. I saved you.” struck this dynamic mix of proud defiance and resolve. Clark knew it would anger Zod and he was willing to take the risk of being killed to stand his ground and to not let Zod forget that the only reason he was there threatening Clark was because Clark saved his life as any hero would do.

What I Didn’t Love
I got nothing.

Other Bits

Lois (to Clark): “Part of us merging our lives together is finding the right spot for everything.” Like over there will be Conner’s cot.

Clark: Holy crap, Conner! I forgot all about him. Eh, my mom loved raising me, she’d love raising Conner.

This is the only proof we have that Conner was ever on “Smallville”. Maybe he’s living in Shelby’s doghouse? But then where’s Shelby?

*Did Tess only begin wearing glasses when she became Watchtower to make her more like Barbara Gordon/Oracle? The only difference between Tess and Oracle is that Oracle would take the gun from Lois wheelchair and all if it meant following an order. Lois was a doing a bit too extra with that move.

*They used the word ‘sacrifice’ umpteen million times. They should’ve just called it ‘Sacrifice Part Two”

*I loved when Clark told Oliver he knew everything about the Phantom Zone and Oliver said, “I hope all your studying paid off because this is test time.” Clark shot him a look like, “Who the fcuk invited you?! Why aren’t you with your wife?” But irritation gave way to lust when Ollie walked out in his gladiator gear. Clark gave him an up and down look worthy of Lex Luthor.

*I think Clark has fought Oliver more times than he’s fought any one villain. He and Oliver fake fought in "Odyssey”, Oliver shot him with an arrow in the same ep, now this fight. They are such a kinky couple. I guess they have to keep up with Tess and Emil. The things those two get up to.

Well hello Mr. Queen. My sword isn’t the only thing made out of steel right now.

*When did Hawkman explicitly say what beat back darkness was an actual object? I assumed he was talking about a force of hope from within not a McGuffin.

*The exposed brick in their apartment reminds me of how their apartment looked in the story “For A Thousand Years”, which is a lot like this episode.

In it Lois teases about Superman who Superman would like to marry and they’re all settled in newlywed bliss as Mr. and Mrs. Clark Kent when Wonder Woman comes. Lois is jealous/paranoid about Diana’s relationship with Clark because they’re both superpowered beings

Even Conner has his suspicions

and it doesn’t help her paranoia when Diana and Clark disappear.

Even in this situation Clark doesn’t tell Lois there’s a chance he may not return.

The two are transported to Valhalla where they end up battling a thousand years war (in Earth time it’s been three weeks). And while Diana wants a bit of that Clark loving he refuses

And that where it differs from the show because Clark gave Oliver a handjob to convince him to go along with their plan against Zod.

Prophecy

What I Loved
*While a lot of it was just white noise (is Orion’s bow a call back to the other objet d’art of contrivance on this show? The stones, the dagger, the ship’s key..) and I was all set to designate it “episode 19 a week later”, all that went away when I saw Toyman’s Secret Society of Villains. What can I say, I’m easy and as many DC characters we’ve had on the show, I may think it’s a bit too much, but I do love a good shout out. It was so cool to see the villain counterparts of the JLA.

Captain Cold who has compromising photos of Bart

Black Manta who no one seems to care walks around looking like he’s wearing an old timey deep sea diving helmet

Metallo

And Roulette who is there apparently because that wench Chloe’s check bounced from when she had her set up that extravagant challenge for Oliver.

I couldn’t figure out one figure. It looked like Solomon Grundy but I’m not sure.

Don’t get me started on the Starro diode, sheer genius.

It was GENIUS! (even though Lois with Clark’s abilities should not have been able to attach the diode to her impenetrable skin or how stupid it was for Lois to actually attach the diode to her considering she she knew with Clark’s abilities she would be extra dangerous under mind control. Couldn’t she have finessed Wiinslow until she knew it was getting close to sundown instead of lucking out and getting to Clark right before sundown?)

*Lois (to Clark): “I had to use my freeze breath…”
Clark: “Arctic breath”.

Clark: “This is normally when I use my super-hearing to listen in on the Marionette Boys to see how they operate.”

Lois: “Right, and a big part of that is the squinty head tilt, yes?”

Clark: “Apparently”.

I love who he’s so proprietary over his abilities like calling his X-Ray vision microvision. It was cute seeing Lois play around with Clark’s power. They’re fun when they’re not embroiled in relationship angst or marriage yakkity yak.

*Clark: “This whole time it’s been up to me to decide when to take control of my own destiny. The trials end when I’m ready for them to end. I can only be what the world needs when I can finally admit I was more than just the son of Jor-El and Jonathan Kent and you knew the time would come when neither of you could guide me anymore and that time is now.”

I joked that I would use my Superman book to gauge when Clark was close to being Superman. The further book!Supes was from Clark meant the further off the path he was. And with that ladies and gentlemen …

You Are Here, Clark.

Even though his parents always knew he would have destiny beyond anything they could conceive of and they gave him the tools he needed, it’s always been up to Clark. They’ just made sure he was sent off with love.

At least until next when when you do something dumb to piss me off.

What I Didn’t Love
*I don’t want to seem as if I’m just bagging on Clark and Lois’ relationship just to bag on it, there are good things about them as a couple….that don’t come to mind just right now but I am sure it’s there, but there was zero logic behind Lois calling the wedding off. One, there was no dramatic resonance to it since Souders and Peterson has been banging the wedding drum for the past two months and every promo pic or article talks about the wedding, so even if they don’t get around to exchanging vows, we do know that they end up at the church on time preparing to marry. To end on that not of “will they or won’t they” when we damn well know they at least get back together was redonkulous.

Two, when Lois had a phone relationship with the Blur didn’t she at least remark once about how lonely his life must be? Now that she knows he’s Clark, now that she’s been able to walk a mile in Clark’s powers and knows what he has to contend with, why then would her solution be to break up with him instead of reassuring him that he has a shelter in the storm? I don’t buy Lois’ solution to Clark’s overwhelming responsibility and duty is telling him that he shouldn’t have time for a life on his own, but to live a distraction free life without any attachments. IMO that’s what she essentially said. Because whether it’s her or Lana or that cute guy who sits next to Jeff who totally checks out Clark’s ass when he walks to the copy room, whoever shares Clark’s life will have to share him. You are either on board or not. It’s unnecessary drama.

Other Bits
*Just what did Clark do with Granny Goodness after “Abandoned?” Obviously he allowed the authorities to handle her but he never followed up on that? There’s no rhyme or reason to how he handles Darkseid Minions!

*I know it’s not the case, but I like to think that Lois’ “son of a bitch” when she hit her head and “Supernatural”s two references to Superman, dark side and Kryptonite were shout outs to each other instead of mere coincidence.

*OMG, that’s it! Jor-El brought down the Fortress on Lex because he assumed Clark had brought him there to ask for Jor-El’s blessing! Clark not addressing Jor-El properly distracted him and he forgot to give Clark’s powers to Lex.

*Kara (to Oliver): “How did Watchtower find me? I haven’t checked in in weeks.”
Oliver: So that’s why you didn’t respond to Clark’s Evite about his and Lois’ bachelor and bachelorette party or why you didn’t come to help pack up the farm.

Kara: Pack up the farm?

Oliver: Yeah, yeah, they moved. You’ ve been here that long? I found it strange that you didn’t come over to meet Conner.

Kara: Conner?

Oliver: We really need to establish a phonetree for this League. Conner is Clark and Lex’s son, never mind. When I get you out and we get topside I’m calling the Missus and telling her to put together a phonetree.

Kara: You’re married now?

Oliver: We seriously need a phonetree.

*Kara doesn’t answer how long she’s been down there. I really don’t want to know the situation going on in her pants.

”I know why I’m here, but why are you here?”
“Because I’d rather do a guest spot that has no significance than be on “V”.

*One of the folders Lois survey says Theron Layne. The name Theron Layne was seen in “Spirit” in Lex’s inbox, another business was Cameo Jewelers, the jewelry store in “Committed”

*Who are these intergalatic entities that come to Earth and create these elaborate mazes and trials? These are the same busybodies who create crop circles and mutilate cows.
*Jor-el (to Kara): “Sometimes the greatest sacrifice a person can make is for them to give up what they hold most dear.”

*LMAO at Dark Archer, Metallo and Manta creating a business under their villain names. You don’t know how much that made me laugh.
*Good news: Lana was mentioned. The bad news: it reminded me about how sad a parting Clark and Lana had when they didn’t have to have one.
*Instead of yelling at Jor-el about pulling her out too soon, Kara should’ve yelled at him for leaving her there so long. Help a sista out, Jor-el.

*Granny Goodness to Oliver: “Thank you. You see, those traps were designed to keep the prophets out. Orion’s Bow was a light like the world would never see again. It was the one power Darkseid could not defeat.”

I’m leaving this here for you, Ollie

I love how Oliver, blonde that he is replies that “We’ll find a way somehow to defeat you.” And we’re supposed to worry. Didn’t the bow say “the only true power is within?” Hasn’t Oliver seen “Dumbo”?

*Is there a toy machine that gives out Legion rings? They’re like Pogs, why does everyone have access a Legion ring?

*Lemme guess Oliver goes rogue at the wedding like when Oliver and Dinah’s wedding was disrupted (and Ollie was kidnapped and replaced with a lookalike who tried to kill Dinah, forcing her to kill him).

~I leave you with.
