This past weekend was what is affectionately called, “The Nerd Prom”, the White House Correspondent’s Dinner whereas last night was the Fashion Prom, the annual The Costume Institute Gala Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The theme this year was “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” celebrating the work of designer McQueen who committed suicide last year. The night’s honorary chairs were Salma Hayek, her husband Francois-Henri Pinault, Colin Firth, Stella McCartney and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
LOVED
Beyonce Knowles in Emilio Pucci
*Stunning. A fashion critic panned the look saying it look like it’s off the rack from her House of Dereon collection, but I think it’s gorgeous and avant garde.
Solange Knowles in Dries van Noten
*People think Beyonce is well dressed, but I love her sister Solange’s style. She’s really fashion forward and more eclectic in her style. She’s tremendous in her looks.
*These women should be the new “Charlie’s Angels”. Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamera Mellon, Thandie Newton and Frida Pinto.
Frida Pinto in Chanel
*Extraordinary. It shouldn’t work but it does. I adore it. When I was a kid and “Flashdance” came out I was obsessed with Alex’s look of the white dickey and bowtie.
*I don’t know who this is, but I love the look. Like Frida Pinto, I love the play on businesswear with formal.
Hailee Steinfeld in Stella McCartney
Michelle Williams in Miu Miu
*I don’t know what is about her haircut that makes everything she wears amazing. I think she has a stylist who finds dresses that compliments the very retro look. She hasn’t disappointed since she got the pixie cut.
Serena Williams in Oscar DeLa Renta
*I think it’s the hat that cinched it for me. I guess with all this royal wedding talk inspiration struck a lot of people. It’s stylish but not in a dry, classic way.
Amy Adams in L’Wren Scott
*She looks like an adult Pebbles Flintstone. I love the pink and black combo.
Nicole Richie in her design line, House of Harlow
Madonna in Stella McCartney
*Simple and lovely.
Renee Zewelliger in Caroline Herrera
*The backout makes the look.
Rashida Jones in Stella McCartney
*Beautiful. I wish she would perk up though.
Kerry Washington in Escada
*Gorgeous! I love the seafoam, great fit and she’s not wearing her usual brick red lipstick.
Jennifer Hudson in Vera Wang
*She looks like a princess, although the color’s too wan for me.
Jennifer Lopez in Gucci
*Phenomenal.
Emma Roberts in Michael Kors
Isabel Lucas in Louis Vuitton
*She looks like something out of Vogue. The overall look is lovely.
*Daphne Guinness killing it in an Alexander McQueen she’s rocking. It looks amazing on her.
Diane Kruger in Jason Wu
*Classy, a bit too safe for Diane, but she can wear anything.
Dakota Fanning in Valentino
*She’s always so stylish, yet age appropriate. I love everything about this dress.
Ciara in Prabal Gurung
*I don’t love the color on her, but Ciara can rarely do wrong in my book.
Eva Mendes in Stella McCartney
*Gorgeous.
Chloe Sevigny in Alexander McQueen
*Impeccable as always.
Christine Teigen (with boyfriend John Legend) in Chris March
*Daring, flirty, just what is called for at the Met Gala.
It reminds me of what Madonna wore at the Vanity Fair party after the Oscars
Ashley Olsen in Dior
*Hold the presses! One of the Olsen twins isn’t dressing like a hobo? What world is this?
Janelle Monae in Chanel
*I love the cumberbund (or is it just a wide sash?) and the hat, but this is too common a look for her.
Janelle is with her “Hooligans in Wonderland” tour mate Bruno Mars
HATED
Mary Kate Olsen in Givenchy Haute Couture
Liv Tyler in Givenchy
*The yellow is terrible.
Lea Michele in Escada
*A rare fashion misstep for Lea. Too plain.
Keri Hilson in Atelier Versace
*It looks like a modified Jersey. No.
Jessica Alba in Ralph Lauren
*How embarassing, Jessica. You forgot to steam iron your dress.
Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler
*Drab sourpuss in a drab dress. For someone who is oddly sexy sometimes she has no real sense of fashion.
Joy Bryant in Missoni
*Who keeps inviting her to red carpet events! She’s barely been in anything and she always come looking out of place. This is not a family picnic! Knit dress, are you kidding me?
Jessica Szohr in Versace
*She’s so beautiful but even that won’t help her getting away with wearing this to the Met gala. This is not the Teen Choice Awards. No effort with her hair and the only thing that’s interesting are the shoes.
Julianna Marguiles in Narsico Rodriguez (with Narscico)
Emma Stone in Alber Elbaz
*Hair and lipstick are all wrong.
Iman in Stella McCartney
*This “Solid Gold” era outfit won’t do. It pains me to nix it because I love pantsuits, but this is not a good look.
Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera
*She looks like watercolor by a three year old.
*I don’t know who she is but she could’ve worn this to a picnic. Doesn’t not fit in.
Naomi Campbell in Alexander McQueen
*I don’t even know what this is. The swan design in the front is beautiful but the rest looks like mottled feathers glued to a dress.
Model Brooklyn Decker in Michael Kors
*Brooklyn, Brooklyn…
Leighton Meester in Louis Vuitton
*Why does she do this to herself?
Alicia Keys in Givenchy
*The leather bolero is awful and it’s just looks so drab. Usually Alicia brings her A game, but this is Dlist fashion.
Ginnifer Godwin in Topshop
*I don’t know why I always think Ginnifer is from “Mad Men” and not “Big Love”. I guess because fashion wise she has as many missteps as January Jones (who was absent this year after announcing her pregnancy. Her rumored ex boyfriend Jason Sudekis of SNL was at the Nerd Prom and wouldn't answer questions regarding her pregnancy.). I see where she’s going with her makeup, it’s very runway, but for a gala event it’s a bit too Adam Ant/Space Oddity.
Singer Cassie in RAG & BONE
*She and Ginnifer Godwin should’ve stayed together the entire night.
OTHERS
Maggie Gyllenhaal in Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney
Designer L’Wren Scott with beau Mick Jagger
Leelee Sobieski in Vionnet
Kristin Bell in Tory Burch
*If only her dress was cinched more at the hips. I love the Grecian look but she missed it.
Kristen Dunst in Chanel
*Oddly enough I don’t hate this and I’m not one for showy patterns. If it was longer and her hair was actually done, I’d love it.
Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney
TV host Lara Spencer
*At any other event this would be on the best dressed look but it’s too subdued for the Met gala.
Fergie in Marchesa
*If only it was a strapless dress or it didn’t have the high blouse like something out of “Dynasty” I’d love it. I do love the headpiece.
Kanye West in Tory Burch (with Tory Burch)
Jessica Stam
Emily Browning in Marc Jacobs (with boyfriend Max Irons)
Ethan Peck in a nice charcoal suit coat. Still not as dapper as his granddad Gregory
Dianna Agron in Michael Kors (with Michael Kors)
Is Eddie Redmayne’s fly undone?
New mom Elizabeth Banks (she adopted a child recently) in Tommy Hilfiger
Demi Moore in Prabal Gurung with a Philip Treacy headpiece
* Love the headpiece and I can appreciate where she’s going with the look, but it doesn’t work for me. I don’t know why I loved Serena Williams’ look when it’s essentially the same.
Don’t know who she is but this is a great look.
Crystal Renn in Zac Posen
*Great dress.
*Until very recently Crystal was a plus sized model. In an interview she talked about the pressure and criticism she received for losing weight.
Colin Firth in Tom Ford. Love the jacket.
Karen Ellison (wife of Jack White of The White Stripes and 15 other side projects)
Host Lala Vasquez (and husband NBA player Carmelo Anthony) in Vera Wang
*Too prom like.
Claire Danes in Calvin Klein
Blake Lively in Chanel
*The only thing keeping this off my hated list is that I like the style even though the color and Blake’s hair style is all wrong with it.
Bar Rafael in Alexander McQueen
*Leonardo DiCaprio’s model girlfriend. The shape should be more formfitting.
Aziz Ansari of “Parks and Recreation
*I love the tie and the cut of his suit jacket.
Anna Dello Russo in Alexander McQueen
*She has an egg on her head, what can you say to that? It’s funny that the look screams John Galliano to me and I didn’t read about one person wearing Galliano.
Barbara Walters. I love the blue and green combo, but that’s about it. And is Charlie Rose Babs “gentleman friend”? I’m going to start that rumor.
Amy Poehler in J. Mendel
*Don’t know who she is but did she think she was going to a brunch at the women’s center? I’m all for women wearing pants at fashion events, but this is too casual.
Ashley Green in Donna Karan
*Basic look.
Alexa Chung in Christopher Kane
*A bit too Sunday School, but I love the layers on the top.
Maggie Q in Tadashi Shoji
*So close, Maggie, so close. If only the bottom didn’t have those ruffles on it. The flower is great.
New mom Miranda Kerr (with husband Orlando Bloom) in Marchesa
*I love the playfulness of it.
Tommy Hilfiger and wife. I give him points for the color but he looks like a Vegas cards dealer. I love top of his wife’s dress.
Sir Paul McCartney. I love the tartan jacket
Model Carolyn Murphy (with Tom Ford
*I am so curious as to who she’s wearing. It’s a disaster.
Vera Wang showing her thinspiration
Don’t know who she is but I love the colors. It’s a bit too Malibu 1970s but it works for her
Designer Marc Jacobs (with the beard)
Some guy who took the tartan game to the next level.
Giselle Bunchen in Alexander McQueen
Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney
Anna Wintour in Chanel and Andre Leon Talley Can’t tell them nothing!
If you need some lavender fabric, I feel sorry for you because Andre used it all up
Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein
*I would love it more if the back was more draping, almost like a Halston, vintage 60s, because the dress is very boring and basic looking at it dead on. If there was more embellishment to the dress I’d love it.
Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci Premiere
*She looks wonderful. I think this is a great look for her. I think often she tries to be overly edgy, and this has just enough bite but remains classy.
Shalom Harlow in Marchesa
*Let a model do what a model does best. She looks incredible. It’s a dramatic and gorgeous dress.
Daisy Lowe, daughter of Gavin Rossdale
Rihanna in Stella McCartney
*Why is she looking like Fiona from “Shrek”. I’m tired of that red.
Saoirse Ronan in Rodarte
Sofia Vergara in Caroline Herrera
*I would love it more if it was a fuller top.
Taylor Swift in J. Mendel
*From behind with the train flowing it doesn’t look bad at all, but facing it head on with all the gathering in the front it looks a shambles.
Lucy Lui in Vionnet
*Even though I normally hate feathers if instead of a skirt she was in palazzo pants and the bodice was cinched in at the waist I’d absolutely adore it.
Chanel Iman in Dolce and Gabbana
*Too plain!
Jourdan Dunn in Burberry
*Too severe a look.
*Chanel and Jourdan are two of my favorite newer models. I love when they work together. It’s like when Chad White and Kerry Degman work together. It’s Superman/Batman of the model world.
Milla Jovavich in Mami
Sofia Coppola
Penelope Cruz in Oscar De La Renta
*Shapeless.
Christina Ricci in Zac Posen
Rumer Willis in Badgley Mischka
*Rumer was featured in a Badgley Mischka campaign this year
Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen
“Transformers 3 actress Rose Whitley-Huntington in Chanel (she came with boyfriend Jason Statham)
Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen
Mary J. Blige in Gucci
Naomi Watts in Stella McCartney
Mia Wasikowska in Thakoon
Ilsa Fisher in Tory Burch
*Now I can tell Amy Adams and Ilsa Fisher apart seeing as Ilsa barely works anymore.
Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) in Yves St. Laurent
