Extras
Scott Westerfeld

This blog posts celebrates two happy events of this summer for me.  The first, is that I was able to book Scott Westerfeld to come and speak at one of my libraries for Teen Read Month.  The second is that his publishers sent me an ARC of Extras!  Having just listed to the first three books in the series this summer, their world was still fresh in my mind and I was exited to see what new twist he could possibly come up with for the new book.

Extras takes place in Japan, just a few years past the end of Specials.  A new economy has formed, where people earn credit for community service, going to classes and doing their jobs.  Make sure artists and other creative types are rewarded fairly, points are also given for your fame, or face rank.  Aya yearns to break the top 1000 in her city, which guarantees that you will be invited to the hottest parties and be rich enough to buy whatever you want.  But last she checked the number at the corner of her eyescreen, she was barely in the top 500,000.  What will she do and who will she betray in order to get the story that will make her feed hot?

Fans of the series will not be disappointed in this action packed addition, that once again is an awesome mix of science fiction, ethics, and environmentalist wrapped up in a delicious teen pop coating.
