Spent the weekend at Escapade, a delightful multi fandom con five minutes from LAX--and it sort of turned into a mini Pros con for me since I spent 90 percent of my time with Pros friends. Yay. I've heard about Escapade for years, and it's only a short plane ride away for me, but had never gone. Mostly because I could generally only afford one con a year and that was often a LONG plane ride to Maryland or somewhere far away. Then there used to be Bascon in South San Francisco, which was practically in my neighborhood--I could drive for the day.
Alas, there is no more Bascon and my finances have perked up slightly, so I've been adventuresome. lol I got Bistocon (Pros) and SHarecon (Starsky and Hutch) last year and now Escapade. Seeing the same people so frequently was really fantastic, plus this weekend, saw a bunch of pals from the old Bascon. Win-win.
I roomed with my bestie sc_fossil and we hung around with Krisser and msmoat, so there was much Pros discussion and t-shirts worn. I even bought a Pros sweatshirt--my first--so I will be properly attired for the next Bistocon in '16. I was surprised to find a Pros zine, and bought a piece of Orphan Black art, too.
Panels! One Pros panel run by Krisser, which was wonderful, and there was a nice group--possibly 10 or 12 people attending. No S&H panel, but I chimed in at assorted others including ones for Sleepy Hollow (we talked a great deal about the last wowser episode), Almost Human and how it was almost perfect, and a really fascinating panel on homoeroticism in the golden age of Hollywood films--complete with a few film clips to illustrate how lusty Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster were in Trapeze. Should probably try to see that one!
I danced my feet off at the Friday night party and drank--gasp--a mimosa. Ate LOTS of hummus (yum) at three different meals, helped out in the con suite which kept me well supplied with See's chocolates (my main food group) and chatted with so many fans. I do love con weekends.
The biggest surprise was winning five unopened Doctor Who DVDs in the raffle. YAY. I now own Doctor Nine's season, two Doctor Ten seasons plus two Doctor Ten specials. Ah, I can indulge in my boy Tennant to my heart's content. What was funny was when the woman announcing the raffle prizes held up the DVDs, sc_fossil was sending me winning vibes by chanting "Dawn, Dawn" in my ear. I almost didn't hear the woman announce my name! Perhaps now I can get my sister to watch Doctor Who.
At the airport now, waiting for my delayed flight. Sigh, same as on the way over, almost exactly. Why is it that a flight that only takes an hour is delayed by a whole hour? Still, I'll be home before Demelza gets back from school. ;-)
