April thirtieth

179 miles.

Yes. That's how far I drove today from the moment I took Demelza to tennis practice, through driving her to her friend's house (passing ours on the way) back in the opposite direction to my friend in San Francisco, then down south to San Jose and back. That's what fandom means to me!

Luckily, D's friend's mother met us in our town instead of theirs so I didn't have to drive another twenty more miles (round trip).

But, I had a blast at the fandom tea. We got there about half an hour after it began so there were fewer people and it was easier to chat. By the time there were probably 20 women (and one man, Morgan Dawn's husband Xlorp who manned the kitchen), it was really loud and difficult to always follow conversations. But so much fun--we talked about all manner of fandom interests--you name it, lots of movies more than TV shows for whatever reason, plus attending cons, zines, fic writing and so much more. All while eating tea sandwiches (no cucumber, curiously), scones, cake and multiple cups of tea.

What was funny is on the way to my friend's house, I listened to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. Apparently, it is the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek--so Peter Segal asked journalist Lesley Staahl questions about Star Trek. She missed all three, but I knew every answer, and I don't in any way consider myself a Trekker. I think just being in fandom for any length of time, I have watched lots of Trek and talked to fans, so the trivia seeps into my pores.

We had a baby at the hospital who didn't have a name for two weeks, so one of the doctors at the hospital nicknamed her Mimosa. I thought it was kind of a pretty name, except it's an alcoholic drink. (Luckily, her family have now signed the birth certificate with a legal name). Then I remembered when I worked in a children's museum in the early 90's and had to register kids for a workshop/faire we were giving. I asked one mom her daughters' names: Brandy, Sherri and--wait for it--Korvayseeay, or in other words, the brand of brandy called Courvoisier. (I only knew that back then because my dad drank it.) All I could wonder was how drunk did she have to get to have sex? I may have to name a character in a story Mimosa now.

I posted every day in April! whew. I will now go back to the once in a while posting...
