Notes: Inspired by a Naruto fic I read long ago but can't find anymore (but I read it, like, 50 times, maybe more. So if some parts sound similar to you, you must have read it too, and you're witnessing my unconscious memory

I can't place all of the references and it's driving me nuts. I recognise The Princess and the Toad (although, testicle jokes aside, Kanda doesn't seem the type to care about losing a golden ball down a well, so maybe the toad made off with Mugen?), and the gossipy flowers from Alice in Wonderland (or maybe Through the Looking-Glass? either story is a good framing device for a tale like this), and The Wizard of Oz and Puss in Boots, and Cinderella (you might like Lime Daiquiri's recent version of this on the Pit), and Rapunzel, and Aladdin (which appears to be based on the 1001 Nights version, awesome~), and Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I'm good on all of those.

But then there's what might be The Beauty and the Beast (while I don't remember a cherubic Cupid anywhere in the story, "bull/monkey/lion hybrid" describes the movie version of the Beast pretty well), and then...Peter Pan? the tooth fairy? something from Aesop's Tales? I don't remember anything about cutting bits off for an argument except for the founding of Ulster with a severed hand, or maybe the Amazons' habit of removing a breast...and maybe Rumpelstiltskin or Thumbelina for the firstborn/beetle one, and, uh...okay, I got nothing on the snake. The dragon could be St. George's dragon, or maybe Smaug from The Hobbit, and the fairy godmother an expy from Cinderella? Unless it's all Shrek? I haven't a clue...

haha, well. The part with the Cupid is a mix of things. So that is indeed the Beast (wasn't expecting it to be that recognizable!), and Cupid, and the tooth fairy. They're not all from the same story, but hey, chaotic Innocence-created world here. XD

The part with the crocodiles and the river and the "cutting bits off" thing is from an Egyptian tale about Anubis and his younger brother (whose name escapes me at the moment) and it involved Anubi's wife and cheating and the younger brother and all i remember is that at one point one of the brothers cuts off his bits to prove his sincerity. (Egyptians were mad. all mad, the lot of 'em)

For the firstborn/beetle one, there's no tale in particular. just a random magical beetle (i could have gone with a gnome, or a sidhe, or a talking goose, but where's the fun in that?) and one of the more common "payments" in fairy tales, that is, the firstborn.

The snake is from a tale i read in a book about portuguese folklore tales, but i think i'd seen a version of the same story on some show on TV, but I can't remember... but anyway, the story is very similar to Beauty and the Beast, so yeah.

The dragon is not a specific one. There are so many stories with dragons that I didn't feel the need to choose one in particular. But now that you mention, it would have been so much cooler if I'd thought of going with Smaug. Smaug rocks. As for the Fairy Godmother, she's also not a particular one. Though I confess the entire time I was writing her I was picturing in my head a mix of the three fairy godmothers from Disney's Sleeping Beauty movie.

I think the only thing I took from Shrek was Puss in Boots. XDDD Favourite version of Puss ever, ever, ever. XDDD

Lastly, thanks for the link, the fic sounds great =)
