I'm glad the NFL is showing the Pats-Giants game pretty much everywhere. They took what could have been a real negative: appearing to forfeit the instrests of the game in favor of making a point with Time Warner and Comcast. Of course it also helps them a ton: the ratings for Patriots games have been through the roof. It would also suck for 60% of the country to miss one of the few interesting games this weekend (only 40% of US homes get NFL network). That said, I know that the whole NFL vs. cable company deal is about both entities (no Jon, I didn't say titties) maximizing their profits. None of it has to do with "consumer choice" or "best interest of the fans". Do they think we are stupid?
If the Giants come together as a team, they might give the Pats a run for their money. However, the very little I've seen of them this season leads me to believe that won't happen. In the snippets of games I've seen, the Giants looked like a dysfunctional family. Receivers giving up on routes, Eli moping about, and players and coaches yelling at each other. Every once in awhile, though, they'll come together, and Eli will zip the ball around, it will actually get caught, and the defense will get in the QB's face. If THAT NYG team shows up, it could be a heck of a ball game. AND it starts after the boys are asleep, so I won't have to worry about fighting anyone for the TV! Life is good.
Hey Dave! What do you think about the Mitchell report?
Well, not much. I think they should go ahead and see what they have actual proof for, then lay down the punishments stated in the league policy and move on. I don't think there need to be asterisks in the record book, or anything. The circumstances of the game have changed over the years. There was the "dead ball era", there was the dilution of pitching staffs due to expansion in the early '60's and simply a lack of players during WWII. I think the steroid era will have to be one of those eras. Now they need to move on.
What does piss me off, as always, is Pete Rose. "All these guys cheated and nothing happened to them, all I did was bet on my own team to win." The moron still doesn't get it. Betting on a sport, by a participant put the very integrity of the game on the line. Even if he/she always bets on his/her team to win. The day he DOESN'T bet on his own team, he's effectively telling the bookie that his team is going to lose. And let's say his team has a bad year. He is in debt. Creditors are threatening to cut off body parts. Sure would be tempting to throw a couple games, wouldn't it? Regardless of all this, baseball has a rule: no wagering on games. Period. The penalty is lifetime ban. That seems pretty clear cut. I wish ol' Pete would shut his pie hole. He bet on baseball. He's banned. The end.
