Well, all pessimism aside, this actually looks real! Yesterday was my first day in the instrument shop. I have a desk (well, a workbench), they have ordered me new uniforms as they wear white shirts, they have a place for me on their sign-out board and a mailbox! They wouldn't have done all that if I was only going to be there for a little while!
I get an hour for lunch! I don't know what to do with an entire hour for lunch!
I met with the division manager first thing yesterday morning. It only lasted for about five minutes, he just said congratulations and that he hoped it was a move I would enjoy. Next I met with the shop supervisor who took me over to the shop I'll be working in and introduced me to the people there. I knew most of them anyway, but there were a couple I didn't know. The rest of the day was spent taking a tour of the buildings that shop supports, seeing the equipment they work on and meeting some of the managers and lab techs (I was introduced as "a new tech in the shop" !!). I did go on two service calls with some of the other techs. They were pretty easy and not really typical- one of them the lab tech forgot to turn on a particular component. A heating element went out on another and we didn't have the parts on hand and had to order them. Usually service calls involve a lot more time and effort.
At one point in the day we picked up a milliamp generator that was not working right. I pulled the cover off and found a wire that was shorting out against the circuit board. Easy fix.
OKAY, I'M OFFICIALLY EXCITED NOW!!!! I ESCAPED!! I GOT OUT OF THE ENGINE LABS!!! I'M AN INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN!!!!!!!!
