Well, we're back from vacation. I feel kind of like a human paint display; my whole body is a mass of different shades of red. Even the tops of my feet are sunburned! Ahh, but like every year, it was so nice to get away!
The state park we went to this year is one that we had never been to before. It was called Lake Corpus Christi and is located in a small town south of here called Mathis. I wasn't too crazy about the town, but the park was pretty nice- among one of the better ones we've been to. It was very well maintained and very clean. You can tell the people there work very hard to keep the place up. The shelter/cabin we got was pretty average and we were pretty secluded. In fact, we virtually had the place to ourselves for the first couple of days.
Tyler had had us in stitches the whole week. Monday night, we ran into one of the other guests at the bathrooms and he was telling me that he had just seen a couple of havalinas (not sure on the spelling here) which is basically wild pigs. Tyler was in earshot at the time and started talking wildly about the "halloweenas". Hehe! All week long he was coming up with something about it, "Dad, make sure the haloweenas don't get you!" It's gotten to be a huge joke now. We saw several of them around camp. One morning I was up early reading outside in a lawn chair, and I happened to look up to see that I was face to face with one that had come out of the brush about fifteen feet away from me. Kind of freaky because they can be pretty mean.
There was only a few things we didn't like about this park. One was the town, Mathis. It's hard to explain, but I didn't really care for it much. The lake was another, but not much anyone could do about that. The water was clean and all, it was just so warm! I bet it's over 90 degrees (32 C) in some places. There seemed to be spots here and there that were cold- maybe an onderground stream or spring- so we spent some of the time going from one "cold spot" to another. The rest of it we spent playing with the kids which we both had an absolute blast doing!
One problem we ran into was our air mattress. Ann found this thing a few years ago is a Walmart or something and it was great until this trip which was about the third year we used it. It's a metal frame that unfolds into a base about the hieght of a regular bed with the air matress inside a kind of canvas casing. The matress developed a leak Monday night and we woke up with the supports jabbing us in the back. So I found the leak and patched it Tuesday, but the patch started leaking Tuesday night. So I put a bigger patch on it, but same story that night. We got some kind of vinyl repair stuff which sort of worked, but Wednesday night we woke up in the same manner. Thursday night I found another leak and patched it as well thinking I finally had it fixed, but it was worse than before. In fact I slept most of last night on one of our lawn chairs while Ann slept with Tyler. We're going to have to find something else for next year.
Anyway it was a lot of fun, but we're all glad to be back home now. I'm so tired right now I can hardly type, so I'll add more tomorrow.
