Some months ago, some minor Republican senator, whose name I forget, introduced a very small amendment to one of the health reform bills going around, basically saying that health care would pay for councilling with a physician as pertains to end of life care; living wills, do no recessutate orders, things like that.
Some time later, some right-wing group, spearheaded by Sarah Palin, took that to mean mandatory euthenasia for the elderly. Becauae, in their bizarre minds, this sounded Nazi-ish, they also decided this should include euthenasia for the sick and disabled. Then, in a master stroke of cynical demagogury, they invented the term "Death Panels" to describe an imaginary board which would institute this imaginary policy, and Palin went the awesome step further of saying that according to Obama's legislation (which, again, was actually written by a Republican senator before it was radically misinterpreted), her baby son, who she had cruelly named "Trig", would thus be put to death because, having Down Syndrome, he would be judged to be insufficiently productive to society.
At this point, the Republicans were off to the races, as "Death Panels" became "Death Camps", and Obama thus became Hitler.
The way these people approach information of any kind is amazing to me.
