Movies and books

A couple of people have linked to the leaked Spider-Man 3 trailer, but now the official one is up at Apple's page and is much better quality. OMG it looks so good. I can't wait to see if they pull this off. Sam Raimi is the best thing since ever.

I also read some books recently. Yes, shocking I know. So I thought I'd give a couple of well known chicklit books a chance.

I'm curious about the new The Devil Wears Prada movie that opens this weekend. I had heard about the book, but decided now was a good time to read it as any. I must say I was disappointed. The writing style was very dry and pretty bland considering these beautiful clothes the whole thing revolves around. There is a lot of product placement which is annoying. Yes, I understand that the main character works at a fashion mag, and that the author needs to talk about Jimmy Choo and Prada and all these hot designers, but I really don't need to know the adamant details of Starbucks or that the company cars are Lincolns or any of that shit. I found my self skimming a bit here and there when I got bored with the story. The "love triangle" doesn't go anywhere. The importance of her friends is one of the lessons she learns through the progress of the story, but they are woefully unrealized so I had a hard time feeling anything for them. Her boyfriend is almost too perfect, and I would have loved to seen some flaws in him, which would have made it more believable to me that she would possibly leave him for the sexy rogue character, who hardly even appears in the book, so honestly why bother? I think the story is more suited to film because A) we really need to SEE the clothes and the excess and B) I think Anne Hathaway would make this character much more likable and real than the text does. Plus, everyone wants to see Meryl Streep be an uberbitch, admit it. And then there's the fact I love Stanley Tucci. I can't help myself.

I also read The Nanny Diaries which was funnier in places and much better written, but even less satisfying. At least there is some resolution to The Devil Wears Prada quick though it is. I thought The Nanny Diaries was a good read that completely fizzled thanks to a really annoying ending. Perhaps the writers were trying to make a statement, but unfortunately made me think that I had wasted my time. The resolution is just non-existent and the whole thing felt unfinished. I know that life is often unfinished, but honestly that's not what I read fiction for.

All in all I was very disappointed in both of these books. Can anyone recommend some chicklit that's light-hearted and fun? I like something that's funny. I just want a good summer read with a main character I could give two cents about.

PS- Frappes from the local coffee house are the shit. Just so you know.
