[Marian looks thoughtful, idly tapping her fingers against the table she's leaning against]

Well, it's been a while since I was last a soldier. [The flicker of a grin] I suppose it would be interesting to see if I'm as bad as it now as I was then. [worse, probably :'|]I'm enlisting, incidentally, not being drafted. I think if I'd been drafted, I'd ( Read more... )

[ B( he tries looking displeased, and succeeds.] I-

... probably deserve that. But seriously Marian, going to war? This isn't even our battle, the people of this universe barely tolerate us here.

You'll have to try harder, next time. [she frowns] I'd tell you to stay home, if you wanted, but... you really don't want that, do you.

Don't tell me that, you know I'll go and do it. [Beth get an actually, genuine smile from big sis, half amused, half self-deprecating] Of course not! You know me, I love killing people.

Joining is a serious commitment. Don't do it if you think you're going to skip out. [It sounds like a joke. It isn't. She takes it all srs bsnsly]

In my defence, last time I skipped out it was because our general betrayed us, our king was dead, and my village was on fire. [She's...sort of joking, but she is taking this seriously]

Come to think of it, I was probably a better soldier than I was refugee or noble or Champion. [a mournful sigh] I don't know if I like what that says about my life, Shepard.

I'm sure you can't be worse than when I first held a sword. Nearly stabbed myself in the foot, I did.

[a pause.] Good luck, Lady Hawke. Hopefully we might end up in the same squadron.

That gives you better luck than I - as I recall, I did stab myself in the foot. In my defence, I was five. [She shakes her head absently] No, it's less the mechanics of soldiering that I'm worried about, and more that I'm absolutely terrible at taking orders. Seven years out of the army probably hasn't done me any favours in that regard, either. [a grin]

[And then she nods] The Champion of Kirkwall and the Hero of Ferelden, fighting side by side? I'll have to make sure someone writes all the detailsdown so that Varric can grossly exaggerate them.
