With the Sorge's fire having squashed plans for a "Pirates in Pink Pants" show in January (and the cancellation of a January KLP fundraiser halting a one-time revival of "Dead Air"), I had a month off from theater, spent catching up on both work and DVD projects (although I did audition and rehearse for an April show).
This month changes all that, because tomorrow night, I'll be doing onstage set changes for the closing-night performance of "Prelude to a Kiss". While I still wish I'd auditioned for an ensemble role in this (would've been the easiest role of my life!), I suppose I needed the aforementioned time off. However, being able to work a night of crew for this show (which I saw and enjoyed last weekend) is a decent consolation.
Then in March, I'll be playing a flamboyant Irish gent in the dinner show "A Wake to Die For", my first appearance with Actors a la Carte. The role was offered to me earlier this week, and knowing that St Mary's in Horseheads won't be doing an annual dinner show anymore, I jumped at the chance (Most of the cast is reunited from a previous production of the same show, so rather than audition, they just called some people to fill the gaps). That will be a St Pat's show on March 13-14, at the Hill Top Inn in Elmira.
And on the first weekend of April, I'll be playing Popeye in the opening segment of ELT's annual "The Golden Age of Radio", which should be a hoot. If you haven't seen the show in previous years, this will be a great first time to see it. The show will be shorter and tighter than usual, with plenty of amusing characters throughout. The guest star this year is Paul Petersen, who I remember most from Nick at Nite reruns of The Donna Reed Show. He'll be playing the lead in a recreation of "Father Knows Best". My wife Cindy is in this one, too, making this our lucky 13th show as co-stars.
I may also be recording my voice for an audio book version of "Alysa of the Fields", that is, if the audition from earlier this week went well enough. There's also the chance that I'll audition for ELT's "The Diary of Anne Frank", which Cindy has already agreed to stage manage. And if work doesn't overload me, I may also find time to write "The Other Little Mermaid", hopefully in time to offer it as the next Stagekids summer show. Regardless of what happens, I've got plenty to do, and look forward to chronicling the progress of each of these shows, to some extent.
