Jeannette Walls

Every semester, Lamar PA has a guest lecturer come. Last night Jeannette Walls was there. I have to say I REALLY enjoyed it. I really like a lot of what she said... here are some of them.

No matter what they say, all book authors have a dream for their books. Hers was to have someone rich read her book. Then her dream became to have someone that came from her background read it. One day a young woman came up her and said she read her books while on vacation. She told Mrs. Walls that was a girl at her school who was poor, had stringy, oily hair and wore old clothes, and that all the other cheerleaders and popular people, including herself, made fun of the girl. She then said, “I get it now. I’ll never make fun of her again.”

Mrs. Walls is on a campaign to get people to tell their story. It doesn’t have to be to the country, but tell someone. Write it down, tell a friend, it doesn’t matter, just tell it.

Everything in life is a blessing and a curse … it’s up to you to choose which one.

If at least one person in your life believes in you, you can overcome anything.

Secrets are like vampires, they suck the life out of you, and they only exist in the darkness. If you shine light on them, they die.

(Between Mrs. Walls and her mother) Things usually work out in the end. What if they don’t? Then you haven’t gotten to the end yet.

(Between Mrs. Walls and her mother) I had the best day. I feel off a horse. How is that good? Any fool can ride a horse, it takes someone special to fall with grace. To get back up and ride again.

Never apologize for your scars. They give you texture. If you look close enough even silk has texture. Silky texture can sill be tough, and rough texture can still be beautiful.
