The situation - my boss was recently married (last year) and is now out on leave for the next few weeks as his wife has their first child

Effective way of dealing with it: "Oh, really? Accidents happen, huh? Funny enough, they don't happen when you're a LESBIAN."
(I was tempted. I was so very tempted. I'm not out at work simply because I haven't dated anyone since I was hired. If I hadn't been so utterly flabbergasted that someone actually SAID that in the first place, I probably would have.)
Oh geeeze, they spoon feed that to boys in the media too? I just want to punch society in the face now. x____x
That's horrible and so very rude. I mean, what if you did want kids but were physically incapable of having them? Your medical history is none of the their business, and being pestered like that would be a horrible daily reminder.
But sadkjhfsj, that's just a really shitty situation.
Would if be possible to send out an email informing your coworkers that your love life is not something you wish to be discussed at work?
This! I had someone do that to me at work today. I was asked out of the blue if I had kids. I don't, expressed such, and was given the "It's never too late" speech which flabbergasted me.
I said I'm incapable of having children. "Oh miracles can happen for anyone!"
I would have liked to have children at one point, but after living with (and helping raise) a special needs child, I'm good. I don't need to have children, and I hate that there doesn't seem to be a polite way to say so, and people feel free to ask uncomfortable personal questions about my reproductive organs as a result of saying that I don't have children.
See, considering I'm going to be 39 this year, you think I'd be past that already. The problem is I don't look it, so I *still* get the "oh, you'll change your mind!" crap. I'm like, "no, I really won't, and even if I did I'm pushing the page where I'd think twice about it because of the possible health complications". If I was going to have kids I wouldn't want to be giving them the short end of the genetic stick!
It's just a stupid stupid stupid thing in this day and age. We don't all need to have a ton of kids to work the farm. v_v
Its one thing to ask "You want kids?" but to asking someone WHEN they are going to and then to insinuate that they will even if they don't want to borders on harassment! >< *So frustrated
