Things I realized if I were to turn Age of Empires into orig fic:
* If I remove my brain from "giant alien robots" and go for something more like "alien insectoid-based techno-organics" then I open up a lot of the tropes I rather personally love without having to do any hand waving (they're a species, they reproduce as a species, screw the Allspark and Vector Sigma.)
* Speaking of honest to goodness ALIENS - plz take all of the human bigendered pronouns and throw them out the window. All of them. There needs to be new ones, for referencing more than two genders.
* Transformation is not out of the question. However, in regards to the whole "transforming to match earth vehicles", probably not so much. Think of it more like the unmanned military airship lands, Starscream shrugs off the alien version of a heavily armored powersuit, slides his joints around under his natural armor plating to take bipedal form instead of flight form, and then stands up and walks away - very clearly alien, and leaving behind the shell of what could be mistaken for an earth airship.
* Sam? Is completely extraneous. In fact, the entire Witwicky family is completely extraneous to the plot, with the possible exception of replacing Ron with his previous incarnation of Sparkplug. Because really, what I need for the plot is not the naive boy hero, but the smart mechanic who drools over the new tech.
* Which would make Mikaela my new human main character. In fact, it would reduce the main human cast to the Queen of England, Mikaela, and Lennox (who totally knows when to shut up and say "yes ma'am").
...the only resistance to this idea in my head is Ravage, who is affronted at being a bug derived anything. He is a CAT, he says, and he likes being a cat. I'm telling him to suck it up and go investigate another set of legs.
