Clark sat on Ma's porch, the sun setting behind the barn, painting the sky orange, red and purple. Clark's attention though was on Conner and Chris as they played fetch with Krypto. He couldn't help the smile on his face as the two joked back and forth, someone could easily have thought they had grown up together.

“Looks like they've spent their entire lives together don't they?” Ma asked as she sat down next to him handing him a cup of coffee.

“They sure did take to each other real quick,” Clark nodded.

“Well that's no surprise, they're both sweet boys,” Ma smiled.

Clark chuckled as he took a sip of his coffee. “I'm sure calling Conner sweet would ruining his teenage reputation.”

“I'm his Ma, teenage reputations pale against my little old lady adorableness.” Ma smirked.

Clark threw back his head and laughed. “And the world is thankful that you use your powers for good.” A companionable silence fell between them as they watched the boys play, “Does it always feel like this Ma?”

“Does what feel like what Clark?”

“Having kids. Watching them grow up and discover the world for their own.”

“Oh that, and what does if feel like?”

“Like Christmas morning and knowing the biggest present under the tree is for me.”

“Oh that feeling,” Ma said smiling, linking her arm with Clark's and resting her head against his shoulder. “Yes it feels like that all the time. The best gift I've ever gotten. It always amazes me how that one gift can multiple over and over again. My life has been a thousand times richer just because of you.”

“There are days when I think it's all some sort of wonderful dream and I'm going to wake up at any moment and it'll all be gone . . . maybe because there's been too many times when I have lost them both.”

“And we've been lucky to get them back,” Ma said.

“But for how long?”Clark asked. “Conner will be going off to college soon. Chris is growing like a weed. Soon they won't really need me.”

“Not true. No matter how old the child - or the parent - they always need each other. That what makes us a family.” Ma said kissing Clark's cheek.

“Heads up!” Conner shouted as the ball slipped through his fingers and headed for Clark and Ma.

Clark stood up and easily caught the ball, throwing it up and down. “Looks like one slipped by you Conner.”

“Sorry Clark. Won't happen again.” Conner said sheepishly as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“That's okay son. Say . . you boys wouldn't want to play a game of keep away?” Clark said with a smirk.

“Sure Dad!” Chris said happily.

“Good.” Clark said as he tossed the ball to Conner. “I'm it.” Conner and Chris grinned as the backed up and threw the ball in the air.
