I can’t resist a good meme for too long. Very well; I gave in to
lady_rhian’s post.
Comment with "Come at me, bro," and:
- I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
- Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
- Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.
1. What first landed you in DC?
The easy answer is grad school, but in all honesty I chose my grad school because I wanted to be in DC, not for the school itself but for the city (not recommended). I first came to DC when I was very young and then came back several times thereafter, including for a summer class in high school and a semester away in college. I have always been a history buff and enjoyed political history most - so DC is a natural place of fascination for me. I love the city and monuments and the whole *feel* of being here - like you know you’re somewhere that important things are being done every day. Over lunch or dinner you’ll overhear someone discussing some small political issue you didn’t even know anyone cared about. Over happy hour, you’ll find yourself debating national policy or international theory. A sense of awareness and knowledge about politics pervades everything you do here.
2. What has kept you there?
Again, there’s an easy answer - my job. I could do similar things elsewhere, but not exactly the type of work I do now. So really, it’s my love for DC that keeps me here. After getting to know the city a bit, I have to say I think this town is like the best of all worlds. It’s got many of the attractions of a big city - all the global restaurants, stores, shows, concerts, free awesome entertainment every night, etc - and yet the feel of a small town - wide streets, short buildings, small neighborhoods. It’s also very northern - in punctuality and tempo - and yet southern - in friendliness and attitude of life. Cool stuff like the national book festival, rally to restore sanity, or folklife festival happen all the time. On my days off I can go wander through the little known parts of Arlington National Cemetery, go to a gallery with world-class paintings, or go see the pandas at the zoo. Now it’s hard to imaging leaving. The towns with more to offer are few -- and generally to large, crowded, and… well, I generally don’t like tall buildings (which DC can’t have by code). I *heart* DC - come visit and see why!
3. What first got you into SSHG? Do you remember your first story? Your first few stories?
Well, I’ve recently told my story of
how I got into fandom generally, but not SSHG. I mostly read Harry/Hermione in my early days of fandom reading, but then I started to read Draco/Hermione (which is still one of my favorites). And from Draco/Hermione, well, I literally stumbled onto SSHG. I don’t remember exactly how, but for some reason I started reading
Dances with Witches by Pearle, without realizing it was SSHG. And I was instantly hooked. Then I went looking for more because that story was (is) a WIP and I can’t stop reading there. I found
hayseed_42’s
Ordinary People. Both are still two of my favorite SSHG fics (along with your
Sage,
lady_rhian, and a bunch of
bambu345’s fics).
4. Last meal, Miss Foodie. What do you eat? Where? And, just for the hell of it, with whom? :-)
Well, my real last meal was my breakfast this morning of fresh picked strawberries and plain, no-fat yogurt with me, myself and I.
But since that’s not exciting, I’ll tell you about last night’s dinner. I met the goat (my best friend) out because we were going to a housewarming and tend not to want to eat too much at parties (or not be able to in his case, since he can’t eat cheese in this country). So we went to
Duffy’s, which was right across the street from the party. Known for their wings, we split an order of those and of the sliders. The wings were good, with an interesting spice but keeping its flavor recognizable as a Buffalo hot wing. The sliders were average, but much better when I doctored them up with a slathering of the wing sauce and some blue cheese! I’m not sure I’d call them the best wing in the city (which they’ve won like three years in a row now), but they are good.
5. Where does the English Royal Family love stem from?
Early on my interest in history turned into a love for tradition. There is no easier way to make me cry than to sit me down in front of some ceremony or thing that has been done the same way for hundreds or thousands of years. Instant waterworks. At the same time, I’m fairly progressive and like institutions that can at once reflect and promote the importance of remembering and respecting the past, but also look to the future and adapt with the times. Thus = royal love. Plus English history has always been one of the history/the world that most fascinates me. And I like uniforms, fancy dresses and amazing jewels. All of that makes pretty good royal watching!
It hasn’t hurt that after the royal engagement I discovered one of my friends at work, head peep, as I call her on here, is also obsessed with the royals. Specifically for her it’s the fashion and jewels that she loves. But the result is that we talk about the latest going-ons pretty much every day at lunch. The best is when there are jewels to speculate about the origins and history.
