I realized today that it has been a while since I last posted anything. That's why I decided to put up this story I wrote a few days ago. A Magic Kaitou fanfic with a Kid/Hakuba pairing! The song is Ordinary World, one of my favorites.
The lyrics and the scene changes aren't exactly all that well-placed. Some lyrics point to a scene change, others don't. I hope it's not too confusing, though. The first five captions are set before and durin volume 3, chapter 2. The rest are after chapter 4.
Learning To Live Again
Came in from a rainy Thursday
on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
"Man! What a weather!" Kaito hissed as he came in through the secret passage to his father's hidden room. He was dripping wet from the pouring rain outside. "It would be just my luck if I caught a cold or something..." he mumbled furiously as he dropped his heavy and wet cape on the floor.
A glance to the mirror showed Kaito's face pale and his lips were slightly blue. How he hated autumn weather. Always so cold, and wet.
I turn on the lights, the tv
and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you
After Kaito had changed his wet Kid costume into warm and dry clothes he went to his room, flicking the lights on as he stepped inside. The window was open, which it had not been when Kaito had left. Apparently his mother had visited the room in his absense.
Kaito's eyes stopped on a picture that was sitting on the desk next to the window. Kaito walked closer to it and his attention was completely on the picture and the feelings it woke in him. Kaito often watched this picture, especially now.
Kaito was six in that picture, sitting on his father's shoulders. His mother was standing next to them and they were all smiling. When Kaito eyed the photograph he scanned his father's face carefully. He was trying to find a sign, any sign, of a deep secret in the smiling face. He never found one.
What has happened to it all?
Crazy some say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away
The brunet let out a heavy sigh as he turned his gaze to look out the window. "Either father has really good poker face..." he mumbled. "Or I'm not as strong as him..." It was tiring, to live half of his life in a lie. Every night he became something he was not in order to reach his goal. Sometimes you had to make sacrifices for a better ending, but was his new ending really all that much better?
Once again Kaito's eyes were turned on the picture, on the man he looked up to more than anyone else. "I'm not as strong as you", he said quietly. "But I will make sure your memory can rest in peace."
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's and ordinary world
Somehow I have to fight
And as I try to make my way
to the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
"Hi mom!" Kaito cheered as he walked to the kitchen. His mother immediately turned to him to give him a warm smile. "Hi, Kaito. How was school?" "The same old", Kaito answered with his bright tone. "Got the daily routine of chasing from Aoko on the morning and at lunch break, stuffed a pigeon under the teacher's desk and avoided Koizumi succesfully."
Kaito grinned as his mother's smile grew wider. "Well, I'm glad you had fun", she said. "You bet!" Kaito was feeling really happy that day. He was just so happy to spend time with Aoko and his mother.
"So, what's for dinner?" Kaito asked as he skipped over to the stove. "Some fried pork and rise with steamed vegetables", was the reply. Kaito took an appreciative sniff of the cooking. "I bet it's delicious."
With that a soft peck was placed on his mother's cheek. "I love you, mom", he said warmly. A hand reached to caress his hair. "I love you too, Kaito."
Passion or coincidense?
Once promted you to say:
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Kaito was feeling confident in his police disguise. Nakamori-keibu had bouth his act with even more ease than he had expected. Now he just needed to use the smoke bomb he had stashed in his back pocket to create a diversion. As the clock struck ten Kaito carefully threw the bomb.
As the officers around began shouting and running around in panic, he quickly covered the paiting with a poster he had prepared himself. Then he went back among the officers before the smoke cleared.
"Impossible!" came the shout from Nakamori-keibu. Kaito eyed his master piece. 'I have taken the picture, Kaitou Kid.' "He must still be around!" Nakamori bellowed. "Find him!" Every police officer in the room took off after him. Kaito himself stayed behind and waved them good bye. "Go ahead. Take your time", he said quietly.
Kaito turked to the painting and grabbed it from the edges. "Let me take the 'Adam's Smile'", he muttered as he took the painting down carefully. He laid the painting on the floor and removed the poster off it. "Is this painting worth 400 million yen?" he asked himself as he stared at the painting. "Art is really strange."
The phantom thief detached the painting from it's frame, all the while feeling extremely pleased with himself. "I never thought it would be this easy", he said when he was done. It was right then when Kaito felt the cold voice from behind him. "That trick is simple."
Kaito froze in place at the tone of the voice. Meanwhile, the person behind him continued: "People always panic when things disappear so fast. That's why they forget it's not possible. No one uses this inferior trick anymore."
Kaito stole a sideways glance at the boy behind him. He recognized him from the paper. He was that Brittish detective Aoko had been blabbering about. "Your trick is nothing", Hakuba Saguru finished.
Kaito turned to face the detective. "You are late one minute and 13.02 seconds, Kaitou Kid-san", the blond said. Kaito was startled by the blue fire in the detective's eyes. It was fierce, and the perfect opposite of the ice in his voice. Kaito could not help feeling nervous. He had never faced anyone like this before. The look in the young man's eyes almost took his breath away in its intensity. "Because of snow, the train was late", the brunet managed to choke out and the spell was broken. He was back to his collected self again.
Kaito threw down a small smoke bomb and changed to his Kid costume in the smoke. He leaped up to the upper level railing. Once there he let out a confident laugh. "You are also late, tanteisan", he said. The detective did not seem suprised at all.
"Oh, I already cut the rope", Hakuba said with a pleased smile. "After playing magic, you now want to play circus?" "What?" Kaito shouted out as he noticed that, indeed, his escape rope had been cut. "That balloon", the detective behind him continued. "I already released it aswell." "Really?" Kaito said, looking up to check the fact.
Kaito turned around to face the detective again. The blond still had not moved from his original position. He was standing calmly with his hands in his pockets. "Now, you have no way to escape", he said cockily.
The flaring blue eyes locked with Kaito's own purple ones. "I'm curious to know; how come you have to be a thief? What is the purpose of your stealing?" Kaito lowered his eyes, smiling. He still had a way out.
"It's your business to find out the answer", Kaito declared, opening his hang glider. "A hang glider." Hakuba's tone was a tad bit impressed. "You act like Batman." "Batman is just a cartoon character", Kaito replied. "He has no real identity." With that he leaped out the window. "Excuse me!"
Still the detective did not react. "Fool", Kaito heard the blond say. Hakuba then said something about the wind being too strong for him to fly. Right after that Kaito fell.
Well, now pride's gone out the window,
across the rooftops, run away
left me in the vacuum of my heart
Kaito cluched his injured shoulder as he wobbled down the alleyway. Tonight Snake had seemed more persistent than usual to deliver the brunet into his early grave.
"Agh!" Unable to continue Kaito sank down on his knees as droplets of cold sweat ran down his temples. It was only a matter of time until either Snake or the police found him. Which one was worse, he was not completely sure, unless Snake was the type to kill you slowly when mad at you.
"Look at you", a cold voice snapped from behind him. Kaito's attention came back to his surroundings when he heard it. "Your stupidity never ceases to amaze me, you little idiot..."
There were steps as the person walked over to Kaito. "But I guess I should help you, since you are my idiot and all." The voice was unusually warm and affectionate when the last sentense was said. "I'm not yours", Kaito managed to mumble, but could not gather the strenght for any malice. "Ah, but you admit to being an idiot?" "Buzz off Hakuba..." Kaito trailed off as his vision blurred and finally his world went black.
Kaito heard Hakuba's voice call him by his name. All of them. Kid, Kuroba and lastly, it was so quiet he thought it to be a hallucination, Kaito.
What is happening to me?
Crazy some say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away
When Kaito came back to his senses the first thing he registered was the soft matress below him. There was no way the police station had such comfy beds, so he was probably dead. A headache that felt like there were elephants doing the cancan inside his head proved that theory wrong.
With a groan Kaito managed to sit up. He noticed the room to be dimly lit and a slight breeze informed him that he was lacking his jacket and shirt. He glanced to his left shoulder to see it expertly bandaged.
Suddenly his top hat was shoved to his face. He noticed that it rested ontop of his missing articles of clothing that had been folded neatly. Kaito accepted them and just now noticed Hakuba who was sitting next to the bed in a chair. The blond had slight shadows below his eyes. Strange, how even a small lack of sleep could be seen so clearly from Hakuba's face.
Kaito did not say a word and neither did Hakuba as the thief put his clothes back on. As the brunet placed the hat on his head he noticed his monocle still on his face. Kaito touched the edge of it with the tips of his fingers and shot Hakuba a questioning glance.
The detective did not utter a word, only offered the thief his gloves with the faintest of blushes tinting his cheeks. That was when Kaito understood the gestures. He took the gloves, letting his fingers brush Hakuba's hand. It was warm. He had always wondered about that.
Kaito pulled the gloves on and moved to stand up on the floor. He shot Hakuba another look the see blond look to the opposite direction. That was when Kaito decided he could not just leave, even though that seemed to be the detective's assumption. Why else would the window be wide open like that?
"Thank you", Kaito choked out. He found himself looking into blue eyes again. Amazing, how the fire in them still took his breath away. He lowered his head down to be eye-level with Hakuba. "I really mean it." "You're welcome..."
Those were the first words Hakuba had spoken since Kaito had woken up. The thief could not resist the urge to smile. He leaned in and brushed his lips aganst Hakuba's ever so gently. They felt soft and warm, just like he had expected them to.
With a blush Kaito backed off, knowing full well that Hakuba would not look kindly on any further invading of his personal space. "Kaito..."
Kaito was suprised to hear the soft voice speak again. He looked into the blue eyes and understood. "Talk later?" he suggested. The blond nodded. "Thank you." The two words were uttered in such a lost tone of voice it left Kaito between two choises. Should he sweep the blond into his arms and say everything would be ok? Or should he give the detective the solitary he had silently asked for?
With a shake of his head Kaito ran his gloved fingers through Hakuba's curly locks of hair. He only regretted that he could not feel their softness through the fabric of his gloves. "I'll be back to see what this feels like against bare skin, ok?" he said without realizing it.
There was a red tint on Hakuba's cheeks and ears as the blond looked away. Hakuba's hand came up and patted Kaito on the chest, a signal to leave. The brunet only hoped he had not made too big of a mistake as he went to the window and took off with his hang glider.
It was only back home when Kaito noticed the wrapped piece of chocolate in his breast pocket. It had not been there when he had put the jacket on. Kaito smiled to himself as he threw the chocolate into his mouth. Apparently Saguru had mastered the sleight of hand. And the magician was also quite certain that he had not ruined anything at all as the chocolate melted inside his mouth.
