the fandangled new box says quick update, so i guess a quick update is all you'll get. i've gotta boot off to write another essay any second now, so yeah. news!
i suck at uni. that's pretty much it. i've been at kinder/school/uni for the last seventeen years of my life, can you blame me for being burnt out on it all? i cannot wait to put my feet up this summer and not have to worry about this shit anymore. at all. until i feel like it.
ok since i want to get this entry over with, here's a
current playlist.
over it - step outside yourself
really diggin' this. there is only one song that i don't really like, because for some reason it reminds me of the intro music to bad cop dramas. the rest of it is pretty much killer, pete's voice gets cooler and cooler, and i'm loving this pop direction they're taking. having said that...
over it - timing is everything
hot damn if this isn't one of the best albums i own. for me this is the ultimate pop-punk album. 'serial kisser,' 'nothing serious,' 'worry bomb' and 'crush' in particular are so great. if you don't have this album, pick it up or you're missing out on a great piece of music.
built to spill - keep it like a secret
definitely my favourite built to spill album. this album has the best of both sides to this band: catchiness and grandiosity. not to mention some beautiful understated and poetic lyrics.
park - building a better ________
what is it with lobster bands? this is another great album, but again, not quite as good as their last. they have definitely turned down the emo a little bit and turned up the technical precision, which is fine by me. i just prefer some of their more heavy-hitting and faster songs, i guess. 'who is aliandra?' is fantastic though, same goes for 'a message,' which may be their best song yet.
the abandonment - deja disparu
this band is insane, to the point where i have trouble even remembering the order of their songs. how five people manage to construct music like this is beyond me. that's not to say it's not incomprehensible; in fact it's almost catchy in parts. i do have some criticisms though: the vocals are pretty monotone, not just in their delivery but in the rythm too. in fact it's the only predictable element of the band. also, compared to their live shows, the songs tend to blend into each other a bit on cd. but i guess that's half the point; eighteen minutes of mayhem. this is the noughties' avante-garde jazz.
set your goals - mutiny
new found glory-style pop punk with bro-downs and mosh parts. nothing more, nothing less. could be worse.
cursive - happy hollow
haven't listened to this one enough yet, but it's pretty solid. i think i agree with pitchfork though; their screamier stuff is better. this album sounds like a bit of a cross with the arcade fire in parts. not sure what i mean by that.
the bronx (2006)
this album shreds, the bronx are great, but i don't know why they've deliberately toned down some of the songs. they sound so much better when they just let loose. 'oceans of class' is a good example; it's catchy and it's pretty heavy in that old-school kinda way, but it doesn't measure up to their earlier stuff. 'transexual blackout' is the best song on the album; it's also the most straightforward. go figure.
that'll do. yesterday marked a certain special one-month anniversary for me. the initial 'omg i can't believe it' factor has almost worn off, but in it's place is just a great feeling of anticipation and gratitude. and of course, i miss her whenever i'm not with her. which thankfully hasn't been too often in these last few weeks. but it's a sure sign that things are going well.
ok so on that note i'd better go start this essay, haha. what's news with you, world? hit me up.
love.
