yo yo yoooooo. i figured i owed the world an entry, after all i've been out living the high life while you've all been hunched over your computers waiting for an update from me.
so what's news? i've been seeing alice an obscene amount. you should probably get used to hearing that name around here a bit. i can't post a picture yet, firstly because i don't have permission, secondly because i don't want her to feel like i'm whoring her out to the internet, and lastly because she's been doing all the photo takin' while i've been doing all the layin' around.
anyways! so here are the things i'm not:
writing my essay that was due on friday.
eating dinner.
watching any of the movies i've got recently.
getting excited about any gigs.
in shape.
lonely.
spending enough time with my wider group of friends.
rolling in cash.
bursting with confidence.
making plans.
i have this sinking feeling like i should be being more productive. when i say sinking feeling, i really mean stabbing sensation in my chest. i just don't want to be one of those people who 'wake up when they're forty and wonder what happened to their lives/youth/sex appeal.' it's so tempting to blame society for making me this way, but i'm not sure that would be fair. or would it? i'm looking for an easy way out, help me out here people. is it only our generation that has this 'failure anxiety'?
anyway enough of that. saw the wind that shakes the barley at the film festival, yeah it was pretty good, but alice and i agreed that the final scene was completely unnecessary, in fact it probably detracted from the emotional impact of the movie overall. but otherwise, excellent sets and costumes, great dialogue, some genuinely understated funny moments, and a healthy dose of monarchy bashing. i can see it becoming one of those movies that critics give four and a half stars to and proclaim it to be 'genuinely moving' and 'beautiful' and 'stirring' and all that yet gets completely forgotten about in a couple of years. which isn't a problem in itself except that it got awarded one of the highest accolades in the film industry and you'd expect better than that.
also saw kenny on friday, which is totally awesome. i guess if you wanted to be critical you could say that the narrative is too obvious and formulaic considering it's meant to look and feel like a documentary (not to mention some fancy editing and overdubbing in parts), but who cares. it is definitely the best australian comedy i have seen since the castle. probably without the same shelf life though. anyway to quote some comments i've read about it; it definitely makes me feel proud to be an 'aussie bloke' and i would definitely buy it to give copies to all my foreign friends.
so uh. as far as the movies i've got but haven't watched: the motorcycle diaries, whale rider, chinatown, sunset boulevard, notorious, rebecca, out of the past, cries and whispers, rosemary's baby, the seven samurai, on the waterfront, laura, mysterious skin and many, many more. i'm pretty sure my recreation is more about collecting than actually enjoying. which is scary. alice i'm sure you've got a lot to say about that.
same deal goes for books. my reading list currently stands 19cm tall on my bed stand. so many dreams, so little motivation.
i'm counting at least five 21sts in the next couple of months. i can't remember the last time i was drunk. which would ordinarily be a good thing but my body isn't feeling any better for it so i might as well just go crazy.
i'm thinking i might actually go back to portsea this summer and work. except this time i'm gonna lay down the law before i go so i don't get roped into all those fucking 7:30am starts. our new beach house should be almost (if not completely) finished being built in like january or february. plus we're pretty keen to record a proper EP and play some gigs for real this summer. apparently some venues on our hitlist include the likes of 161 and click click. so we'll see you there maybe.
