I'm surprised you're still living in California. I'm assuming it's only because your very awesome job is in California, but really, if they'd ever let you telecommute, you should consider moving. After having seen how (awesome) other states are, I'm surprised I ever survived as long as I did in California without going completely batty. The cheaper cost of living in most of the other states is reason enough by itself to move.

No kidding. I was once offered a position out there in the San Francisco area after my then-current employer here in Texas went under (due mostly to some truly spectacular mismanagement and boneheadedness)... and I had to turn it down when I discovered that, due to the insane cost of living out there, I was better off on unemployment in Texas than with a job in California!
If I ever wanted to move, I can transfer to any of our other offices and keep my current salary... The problem is that right now if I moved, I'd take a bath by short-selling my house. With the artificially low comparable prices right now, I wouldn't be able to get as much as my mortgage balance.
But then there's the weather problems everywhere else... I'm a So.Cal spoiled wuss in that regard. I like the lack of weather here.

The Governator has lost his juevos to stand up to the Feds for the sake of California and caved on this issue.
