Avacado Wood Hollow Bowl

Oct 29, 2008 09:07

[Edited to correct the fact that this was made of Avacado wood, not Orange tree wood as I was previously told]

A couple years ago, my brother brought me some logs from an OrangeAvacado tree that he was contracted to cut down up in North county.

The OrangeAvacado wood was gorgeous, naturally oily, and made some beautiful pieces, all of which have sold in the past years.

I had thought that all the OrangeAvacado wood was used up, but when cleaning out my shed a couple weeks ago, I found a half-log sitting in my scrap wood pile.

My first thought was that it would probably be too checked (full of radial cracks) from drying out to be able to make anything out of it, but when I cut a couple inches off one end, I was delightfully surprised to see that the heartwood was still usable.

Here's the hollow bowl that I made out of it:

In that last picture, you can see where I accidentally broke a piece of the lip off when I mounted the top of the bowl into my expanding lathe-chuck so that I could clean up the bottom. Whoops.

I still have about a foot of that log left... maybe I'll get to play with that this weekend.

...and yes, the lawn in my backyard really *is* that green. ;)
