On the topic of "Gay Marriage"...

Those who read my journal and who know me personally know that I am in no way homophobic or prejudiced against alternative lifestylers. If you read my political threads, you may also be aware of my position on same-sex marriage, which is this:

1) I don't think that same-sex partners should have any less rights and privileges as "Married" couples do. In California, THAT IS ALREADY THE LAW through registered domestic partnerships, regardless of whether or not Proposition 8 passes to solidly define marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman.

2) I don't think that redefining marriage to include same-sex partners is the way to influence the minds of people who disagree with point #1 above. However, influencing the minds of people who disagree with point #1 above is the only reason that I've been given to promote same-sex marriages.

3) I feel that the push to redefine marriage is (at least in part) backed by those with sinister, unfriendly ulterior motives which includes the desire to ban any public expression of religion, introducing multi-partner marriages, and at the very extreme, introducing cross-species marriage (aka: beastiality, zoophilia, etc.).

4) This is a states' rights issue and does not belong in law at the federal level at all, one way or the other. In that regard, I'm a bit of a federalist.

Imagine how surprised I was to learn in the VP debates last night that this is pretty close to the same position as BOTH parties' candidates.

Biden even looked straight at the camera when he said the following:
IFILL: Let's try to avoid nuance, Senator. Do you support gay marriage?

BIDEN: No. Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that.

The question I have for my alternative lifestyle friends, why does it seem that Obama is held up as the choice for the Gay Marriage issue, when it appears that he is against it as much as any other candidate?
