"But they're only here to work hard and make something for themselves..."
Some statistics I have heard recently:
95% of all outstanding warrants for murder in California are for illegal aliens.
Illegal aliens in american prisons are on average in prison for their 6th criminal conviction. US Residents in prison are on average in prison for their 2nd conviction.
85% of all inmates in California are illegal aliens.
Also heard quoted: "They only come here illegally because it's so hard to enter the US legally."
Counterpoint: "I only stole that expensive car because it was so hard to buy it," or "I only robbed the bank because money is so hard to get."
Another quote: "If they don't take those jobs, who would do them?"
Counterpoint: "If'n it wasn't for the blackies, who'd pick all the cotton?"
For the record: I am NOT against immigration done by the book, legally! This country has a LONG history of welcoming citizens from other nations who want to do better for themselves. My maternal grandparents (and their numerous siblings) came over from Russia near the beginning of the 20th century, changing the family name from Geffeissman to "Giffis" in an Ellis-island spelling. My father's ancestors (presumably, since I never knew my father) probably changed their name from "Auchshlein" (or something that sounds similar) to the easier to spell "Exline" when they moved here. (Axline's and Oxline's in the US are probably from the same European family name)
I AM AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and I want to make sure everyone is aware that the distinction is VERY IMPORTANT in my mind. Many stories that bash anti-illegal immigration supporters make it sound like they are xenophobic and against *all* immigration. That's a common spin-doctoring ploy to create animosity among groups who shouldn't be concerned.
In a nutshel, Illegals start out by breaking a law, are dictacted by circumstances to *not* play by the rules while here, and therefore make it a general habit to break laws that they don't feel apply to them.
For example, there are commonly accepted practices in areas of Central America like "Rapto Romantica" (sp?) in cluding many parts of Mexico, where kidnapping 12-year-old girls and raping them is commonplace, and the abductor doesn't get prosecuted if they agree post-facto to marry the victim... plus the victim has to prove she was a virgin and not a flirt before the abduction in order for charges to even be filed... People from these communities come to the US and don't realize that rape is considered bad form, much less a very serious crime. (And that's just *one* example)
THAT is why so many of them are in prison.
THAT is why I am against *illegal* immigration.
