While I wasn't all hot and bothered by Obama, I definitely preferred him over the competition. But now, something he's proposed doesn't quite sit well with me. In his proposal, if you refuse to get "affordable" health insurance, you can be fined up to $1000 a year.
Uh, what? Saythatagainslowly.
First off, what is "affordable"? Who defines it? I'm sure some government think tank will come up with some formula. But as we all know, this ain't a one-size-fits-all country. With what I make and live on here in Odessa, I'm pretty sure I'd be starving and on the streets in San Francisco.
Secondly, isn't that a bit counter-productive? Maybe the person who can't currently afford the "affordable" insurance is working on getting it and then comes along the government and takes said cash out of his pocket. Just doesn't make sense.
Thirdly, and this is a personal view, insurance is a scam. Oh, I am sure that it might be necessary from time to time, but with the way insurance is set up in this country, it's to the benefit of the insurance companies, not the insured.
At first, I thought it was a joke. Put out there by the Onion or the Daily Show. But nope, it's real.
While I do not like the system as it is, I like this proposal even worse.
