The House of Representatives just narrowly passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.
And I'm reading a lot of negatives, mostly from Republicans, of course. Oh, it'll raise taxes, they say. Or, it'll cost the American Consumer more money every year for the things they buy.
Uhm, duh?
Anything that has to do with reducing carbon emissions is going to cost money, whether it's cap and trade, or emissions tax, or even simple government mandates to cut emissions. So it doesn't really matter if you support this bill or another bill, in the end, you're going to end up paying more.
What I find ironic, is back when Dubya stole the 2000 election, I seem to recall that he proposed something very similar and Democrats and environmentalists attacked it for whatever reasons they had (I could be wrong and I accept corrections).
And something else I see a lot of conservatives bantering about is that a lot of natural sources produce carbon and methane that contribute to the warming of the Earth. And you know what? They are right. Whether it's farting cows or decaying vegetation, there is a lot of greenhouse gasses being naturally released. And there always have been. But that's the key : They always have been. And the Earth's natural system of checks and balances mostly kept it in check. But now add in the TONS that mankind is adding to the already natural emissions, and that spells trouble.
I guess the question everyone needs to ask themselves is : How much are you willing to pay to improve the environment? And with what are you going to pay? Money? Your children's future? The very existence of civilization as we know it?
Recently, a friend of mine on Facebook made the comment how nice it would be to have an ocean in Arizona. With the way things are going, she just might get her wish.
I would like to note, I am no expert. These are just my thoughts and opinions and everyone's thoughts and opinions are welcome.
