So, I saw Spiderman III yesterday.
It's been so long since I saw the prequels that I don't really remember them. However, it didn't stop me from getting a strong sequel-feeling from the third movie. Everything has to be bigger and flashier whether it's a good thing or not.
The opening was pretty neat though I'm still wondering which one used the style first, X-Men or Spiderman. The black slime/symbiot creeping across the screen looked appropriately ominous and disgusting. I wasn't as delighted to see foreshadowing of yet another movie.
The plot was... The problem was that there were too many antagonists. The plots were tied together neatly, but the whole movie lacked focus. They could've made a good movie with only the Sandman but like I said, every sequel has to be bigger than the previous part. The Venom wouldn't have worked alone because people don't really want to see movies with an unlikable protagonist. I liked the evil!Peter sequence but I wouldn't have wanted to watch over two hours of that. The New Goblin wouldn't have worked alone for the same reason as the Sandman, and this way there was the incredibly obvious chance for redemption.
One scene I thought were beautiful was the death/rebirth of the Sandman. It was almost poetic, in a superhero kind of way.
One scene I hated and loathed and laughed at was when Spiderman apeared for the final fight. He landed right in front of the American flag. *rolls eyes* Also, Harry's death on top of a skyscraper, surrounded by Peter and Mary Jane and a golden sunrise. Cliché, much?
I do understand why they had to kill Harry. Redemption via death is a Cliché, and if he would have stayed alive the only possible option after this movie woud've been a nice Peter/Harry/Mary Jane threesome. I would't have minded but most of the people would've.
But I'm still bitter that they killed the Pretty.
Various comments during the movie:
ME: Want to bet that the Sandman is defeated by water?
[later]
ME: See, see? I told you so! If the evil guy is made of sand, water is the way to go.
FRIEND: ...You watch too much TV.
FRIEND: Why is Peter so hot only when he's evil?
ME: Must be the hair.
FRIEND: What kind of a moron doesn't realize that after he changed his hairstyle, women were after him? Even though he's a dork.
SPIDEY: *asks Harry to fight with him*
HARRY: *is scarred yet attractive* *also, refuses*
FRIEND: Yeah, right. Like we're going to fall for that one.
ME: Want to bet that he dies?
FRIEND: *laughs* NO.
[Spidey jumps in front of the flag]
AUDIENCE: *points and laughs*
And a question inspired by another movie which shall remain nameless so that I won't give away spoilers. Does anyone know any movies where the hero/heroine chooses the country/equivalent instead of his/her lover? I've seen too many movies where the hero decides that his One True Love is more important than, oh, the fate of his country. Seriously, who does that? No, really, who?
I'm sure there are movies that end differently but only examples I can think of now are from literature (The Thorn Birds and some Finnish young adult fantasy which name I don't remember).
And I made three new fic rec lists:
Stargate: Atlantis I've actually seen only one episode, but the fandom has many talented authors and googling is an easy to way to learn what the show is about.
