meat beaver cleaver

Shellac is playing in Toronto in September and I did not know about it! And I think it's sold out! Fuck! That is the worst shit ever! GROWL.

Nick Cave is also already sold out, which blows, but I totally expected.
At least Genghis Tron/Baroness on the 24th will rule. Yessss I can't wait. I would love to somehow score a press pass so I can take photos. Hmm... this may require a portion of my cunning... NO! ALL my cunning...

Last night at Holly and Ryan's was funtimes. I drank a mojito for the first time AND invented my own drink, called a "faux-jito". That's one thing I can cross off my life list! :D
Ps. It's "faux" not because it is a virgin mojito (yeah right, this is me we're talking about here), but because it's like a simple, lazy mojito (real mojitos are apparently pretty involved).
We played Mystery Mansion which is this awesome board game from the early 80s. I also ate lamb for the first time. It was very succulent but I also found it to be really fatty. I love trying new meats though, so I was really excited.

The only other non-regular meat I've tried in the past was I think venison or veal... I can't remember which one it was, but I know it started with a "v". Nonetheless, I liked it a lot. Oh and I've also eaten calamari (aka squid). Not such a huge fan of that. It was really fishy-tasting and too chewy. Blech. Dave and Ryan and I were supposed to go to Ichiban and have a dare-dinner, where we all ordered each other the grossest looking sushi and we had to eat it... but we still haven't done it yet. Honestly, I don't know how much I was looking forward to that anyway, haha!

I'd really like to try duck, swordfish, and shark. I know I know, some people think that's horribly cruel and all... but I'm just curious. I just like trying different meat, yo. Sorry. It's weird though... in my every day life, I literally sustain myself on salmon, ground turkey and chicken. Sometimes tuna and crab. I pretty much eat 0% red meat on a regular basis. Only on special occasions, I guess? I love steak SOOOO much, especially thick and bloody, but I just never eat it for some reason. Hm.

Anyway, all of this talk about meat is making me hungry. I'm going to go make... a salad?

OH! I was reading this article in Vogue the other day about the stinkiest foods on the planet, and I found out about this fruit called a "durian." This is what it looks like:

This thing is the king kong of the fruit kingdom! Apparently they can get to be up to 10 lbs. and if one fell on your head (if you walked under a durian tree, I suppose), it would absolutely kill you! But that's not all! Once you cut open a durian to eat the succulent, delectable, soft flesh inside, it starts to stink... badly. Like, so badly, that it makes people vomit. From Wikipedia: "The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Regarded by some as fragrant, others as overpowering and offensive, the smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia."
Hah! In the Vogue article, the author compared the smell to a) dead, rotting corpses, b) vomit, and c) sewage, among other things. WHY DO I WANT TO TRY THIS THING??? I'm dying to eat some, and smell just how bad it is.

Here are some enlightening quotes about the durian:

"Anthony Bourdain, while a lover of durian, relates his encounter with the fruit as thus: 'Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother.'"

"Travel and food writer Richard Sterling says: '... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.'"

Check out the Wikipedia page... it's pretty interesting!

I obviously have a new obsession. :)
