It looks like this was a waste of a diary (free publicity for @NMAtv ) #DKos #p2

Jan 12, 2011 01:31

I decided to goof off tonight on Daily Kos and post a quick diary before midnight, so I could still post a diary every day this week and have tomorrow free for something more serious. It didn't work out that way, as the diary wasn't ready until midnight, so I have to wait another 24 hours before posting another. As the end of Excel Saga says just about every episode, tonight's experiment--FAILED!

Ilpalazzo is not happy.

Next Media Animation's take on U.S. news for January 4-11

This has been a very stressful week, and it's not even Wednesday. Come to think of it, it's been a stressful year, and it's not even halfway through January. While I'm not advocating a break from the news (we are part of the reality-based community, after all), I think tonight would be a good opportunity to take a break from serious topics soberly discussed, such as my series on Coffee Party USA or Food, Inc., and see what U.S. news looks like from the irreverent perspective of the animators and comedy newscasters of Next Media Animation in Taiwan.

Join me over the fold for the past seven days of videos hosted by Vanessa and Jen-Jen, who show an amazing grasp of America and its culture and politics.

First up, what is easily the most diaried story on Daily Kos since Saturday, the mass shooting in Arizona, told as amusingly as possible.

Note what Next Media Animation finds most important.

Overseas observers, however, are concerned with a different question: why are guns so easily available in the United States?
Good question. I suspect Tom Tomorrow has the answer.

Next Media Animation couldn't pass up Amy Chua's book, "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother."

The article has provoked a fierce debate, with some praising the model of parenting Chua describes. While others have labeled Chua a bully, suggesting that her children will grow up disturbed and rebellious.
What do you all think?

A prediction for the new year, anyone?

Will 2011 be the year of robots and Artificial Intelligence?
I'd settle for 2011 being a year of natural intelligence, but I'm not optimistic.

Bedbugs, anyone?

Forbes.com asked the US' two largest pest exterminators, Orkin LLC and Terminix, to list cities with the worst bed bug infestations according to data from their local branches.
Yeah, my adopted hometown is in the top three. Sigh.

Of course, a retrospective of the week that was wouldn't be complete without a video about the mass bird and fish deaths AKA The Aflockalypse that have puzzled and alarmed many people.

Personally, I think this is as much a matter of the media finding a new scary story to tell their viewers and readers as it is a reflection of a real set of environmental problems, but your mileage may vary.

There was one video that I decided I couldn't embed, so I give you all a link.

Publisher censors Huckleberry Finn, Moby Dick next?

Publisher NewSouth Books plans to release a new edition of the classic Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that replaces all instances of the "n-word" with "slave."
I'm of two minds over this, and neither one is winning.

And now, NMA's usual assortment of fluff, starting with the late Dennis Hopper's Warhol print, which he shot up in a drunken rage.

An Andy Warhol print of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong is going under the hammer as part of actor Dennis Hopper's estate. The print comes complete with two bullet holes Hopper made during a party.
At least there's a funny story involving guns this week.

What's a week on NMA without a video about a sports or celebrity sex scandal? A boring week, that's what, and this week has been anything but boring.

On the same day legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre announced his retirement, two former Jets masseuses sued him for sexual harassment.
Let's not forget that NMA's breakout video was an animation about the Tiger Woods sex scandal.

No retrospective of the NMA's take on the week in U.S. News would be complete without a weather girl. Take it away, Esse!

And that's a wrap for this week's U.S. news from Next Media Animation.

What times we live in when comedians, including these comedians from Taiwan and Hong Kong, do a better job of reporting the news than the so-called respectable domestic media.
