For some time now, it's worried me that we leave the fate of our nation up to a woefully uninformed electorate. In a time where we have a seriously troubled economy, shadowy enemies actively scheming to attack our homeland, and an impending health care meltdown, it's sad that our country on the whole is more informed about Britney Spears' latest marriage than Abu Ghraib

I'm a bit lazy to read through all of that, but it's probably correct.
I just wanted to reiterate that the system we have was designed specifically to counter the average idiot syndrome. We elect people more educated than ourselves to make our decisions for us.
If this was majority rule, God knows what things would be legal or illegal.
We have a principled Republic. Long live the Republic, long live the Senate!
A way to combat morons voting and influencing policy (indirectly)?
Punch anyone wearing a Choose or Lose shirt. End the practice of paying people to get others to register to vote.

This I disagree with. I don't believe that everyone who votes cares. I believe there are quite a few people that vote either out of habit, or because someone else tells them to.
Also, there are many older people who I believe vote a certain way because they believe they are supposed to. "I vote for this person because he's nice to his mother." Or some other comment that is completely unrelated to the office of presidency.
However, beatenbynuns and tullster's points are correct in that we do have a system of checks and balances to correct for the error of the majority vote. It just doesn't always come out correct in the long run.

What I mean to say is, most who care enough about the system to do their part and make the machine work, do their part to make the machine work. And that the system doesn't need the apathetic and impressionable to function.
