Déjà vu
Evans dominated Boone for 19 years, winning every match-up against the Braves from 1983 to 2001. For consecutive years now the Braves have held the upper hand in the game, but not without a little drama.
In 2002, Behind the passing and leadership of Freshman Quartrback Peter "Jay" Quartaro the Braves were on track to a long waited win against Evans. The Braves led 28-14 with just over four minutes remaining when Evans forced a fumble. Evans scored quickly, converted a two-point conversion, and held Boone on the next possession. Evans quarterback Bryan Dumas later connected with Brandon Siler on a 51 yard touchdown that tied the game with 21 seconds left. However, Evans failed to convert the PAT and Boone’s Kevett Mickle returned the kickoff for a touchdown and the Boone victory.
Last season once again behind the great leadership and 3 touchdown passes from Quarterback Peter "Jay" Quartaro to Steve Hanson, and Jerry Webster, the Braves held a 21-6 lead in the fourth quarter before Evans tightened the gap. Evans scored a touchdown, converted a two-point conversion, held Boone, and scored another touchdown. Sound familiar? But unlike the 2002 game, Evans trailed by one after the second touchdown. The Trojans had a freshman kicker that was inexperienced a decided to go for two. They failed to convert.
Evans had one more chance late but a Bryan Dumas pass was intercepted by Boone’s Hunter Altman and for the second straight year the Braves survived.
