Boone takes advantage of University mistakes
By: Jim Epperson
The University Cougars traveled downtown to take on the Boone Braves in what would prove to be the 6A District 4 championship game.
Coach Ziglar's game plan was to hold on to the ball for as long as possible to keep the high powered Cougar offense off the field. The Braves then set the tempo on the opening drive, grinding out a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jay Quartaro. The drive took nearly 20 plays and 10 minutes off the clock before allowing University quarterback Kyle Israel the chance to step onto the field.
Israel got the offense going for University in the second half, hitting receivers Peter Villanueva, Joe Townsend and Daniel Schwartz for over 180 yards on 12 completions, including a touchdown strike to Schwartz.
In the end, Boone running back Philip Fields proved to be too much for the Cougar defense. He rushed for over 200 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, the two-way Braves' star intercepted a pass inside the University 10-yard line with less than a minute to go.
University also did little to help its own cause. Physical and mental mistakes helped crown Boone as district champs. University had over 10 penalties on the night, as well as dropped passes, turnovers, and a blocked punt inside the 20 that led to a Fields touchdown.
