Been a long time since I've done this challenge, huh? I figured I'd go ahead and write them before I've completely forgotten all Suikoden knowledge (need to replay the games like whoa). Next time I'm probably going to post the drabbles in separate entries as soon as I polish them up.
Title: What Might Have Been - Take Two
Pairing: no actual, but suggested Killey/Lorelai
Rating: G to PG-13
Disclaimer: Suikoden characters are owned by Konami. I'm just like to write about them.
Author's Note: It's times like these when I wish I still had Suikoden V (lent it to a friend) and that I had my save states for the other Suikoden games. Things like castle layout may be messed up here.
Suikoden - #9 and #45 = Gremio and Alen
It was just past sunset when Gremio heard someone knocking on the front door of the McDohl household. Young Master was safely upstairs and Lord McDohl would never need to knock to enter his own house, so Gremio cautiously approached the door. The door opened quietly and a young, dark-haired man entered. Gremio froze for a moment.
"Gremio?" the man called out.
Gremio relaxed. It was only Alen, Lord McDohl's assistant. "What is it?" Gremio asked.
"Lord McDohl is too busy to return tonight."
Gremio sighed. "Young Master will be upset," Gremio muttered to himself. Louder he asked Alen, "Does Lord McDohl require anything?"
"No. Only that his son does not stay up waiting for him."
Gremio was about to reply, but he was suddenly jerked by a tug on his cape. He turned around and saw the Young Master pouting. Perhaps Young Master had heard the door open and scampered downstairs. The boy sure had been quiet doing so.
Alen bent down to look at the young boy face to face. "Your Father is a very busy man. He'll come home tomorrow, I promise," he said.
The young boy just gave Alen a long stare. Gremio bent down to scoop the young boy up.
"Now don't be rude," he said. With the young boy securely in his arms, he turned to Alen. "Then I wish you and Lord McDohl a good night. Please take care of yourselves..."
Alen nodded. "Good night to you as well." With that the young man left and shut the door securely behind him. Meanwhile Gremio brought the Young Master up to his room.
"Young Master..." He sighed. "I also wish your Father would come home earlier. But I am sure he would be here if he could be. He loves you very much."
Gremio ruffled the boy's hair and tucked him into bed. Young Master was restless until Gremio sang him a lullaby. Once the boy was safely asleep, he turned off the candles and went to his own room. He also loved the boy, but the boy didn't need to hear that tonight.
Suikoden II - #30 and #45 = Yam Koo and Miklotov
Miklotov didn't explore the castle too often. He didn't really think about it, either, until Camus suggested it one day. The war had been taking its toll on both of them, but somehow Camus still managed to smile. Miklotov, buried in strategy guides, maps, figures, and his training, not only felt his teeth grinding themselves to dust but hadn't been sleeping too well recently.
"You need to relax, Miklotov," Camus said. "Take a walk, explore the castle, go fishing. Something not here. And no paperwork, no books, no swords."
With that advice in mind, Miklotov decided to take an afternoon to walk around. He had been in his room or the training room so long that he had forgotten how lively the castle could be. Though the sounds of laughter were comforting, they were also disconcerting. Miklotov found himself, minutes later, standing at the docks. He spied a man fishing, his eyes concentrating on the ripples of the water around his pole. Surprisingly the man didn't react as Miklotov approached him. Miklotov sat down a few feet away from the man and observed him for a moment. The long white-blond bangs obscured much of the man's face but Miklotov had learned almost everyone's name in the castle. He guessed that the man was Yam Koo.
"Hello, Yam Koo. How is the fishing going?"
Yam Koo didn't respond. There was a sudden tug on the pole and soon enough, Yam Koo had yanked a small fish out of the water. He put the fish into a basket.
Miklotov coughed. "Uh, my friend said that fishing is relaxing. May I try?"
Yam Koo turned suddenly and gave him a long look, his pole suspended in the air. Miklotov felt as if he waited minutes for a response. Yam Koo smiled and stood up. He started walking toward a building. Miklotov wordlessly followed him.
"For you." Yam Koo pressed a pole into Miklotov's hands. It was very light and flexible compared to Miklotov's sword. He was afraid he would break it. Still, Yam Koo gave him a smile. Miklotov followed the man back to the dock.
If only Miklotov knew how frustrated he would become while fishing for the first time, he would not have taken Camus's advice. Yet for a moment, with Yam Koo's small smile, Miklotov believed that fishing would be the perfect way to forget the war, for a moment.
Suikoden III - #21 and #32 = Aila and Franz
"I want to get on a mantor."
Franz, who had been ignoring all sorts of sights and sounds on his walk back from the stables, stopped abruptly and faced the curious Karayan. He sent Aila an angry glare. "No."
"Please?" Aila begged, her hands clasped in front of her and her eyes wide.
"No." Franz turned his back to her and continued on his interrupted walk. Aila grabbed his arm.
"Hugo let me ride Fubar once..."
Franz jerked his arm out and Aila let go, stepping backwards automatically. Franz's fists curled tightly against his legs. "Ruby is not some pet for civilians to ride on," he spat. "He is much more special! Someone like you wouldn't understand."
"I just want one ride..."
"I said no. You know what that means." Franz turned his heel once again. Aila shrugged. It was just a mantor. He didn’t have to be so protective...
Suikoden IV - #21 and #25 = Keen and Jewel
Jewel had been playing hide and seek with Tal and Kenneth and Paula like usual, but something had gone wrong. In a last minute attempt to ditch Tal, who was the seeker, she had stumbled into the confession room.
She hadn't even noticed she was in the room at first. It just seemed like a dark empty room. Maybe someone had just moved out of it, or it was under repair, or the crazy mushroom guys were growing mushrooms in here. She didn't know until there was a hand on her shoulder and she was forced into a specific part of the room. Suddenly a light was turned on and she could see a figure standing on the other side of the screen.
"Confess," the man said.
"Wait a minute! Lazlo didn't summon me here! Why do I need to..."
"Confess."
Jewel took a step forward and suddenly she saw the glint of a knife. She gulped.
"Uh, I am playing hide and seek with Tal, Kenneth, and Paula...?"
"More."
"I play hooky sometimes, but I'll fight for you Lazlo whenever you need me! I promise!"
"Anything else?"
"I always believed you were innocent, Lazlo."
"Okay. You may go."
Jewel stepped out of the room shakily, only to be caught right away be Kenneth.
"You're it!"
"Darn!" She closed her eyes and began to count...
Suikoden V - #13 and #23 = Kyle and Killey
Well, it wasn't quite the Sun Palace, but Kyle had quickly found himself comfortable at the Prince’s headquarters. If there wasn't a war going on, then Kyle would probably enjoy this place more. The place was full of hot babes, like Jeane and Lelei and his current favorite, Lorelai. With her nicely shaped assets and her pretty face, she was definitely something to look at, and perhaps more, if he could court her away from that Sindar obsession...
Or he could feed her some Sindar facts and then distract her into some other, more fulfilling activities. She was usually spending her time hanging out in the topmost room with Zweig and Zerase. Zweig was much older and not handsome and therefore could not possibly be attractive to her womanly senses, and Zerase was deathly pale and cold...was she even human? Someone like Lorelai, who was young and beautiful, should be spending more time in the daylight and not with people as depressing as those two.
Well, he heard that Lorelai and Killey had some history. Perhaps Killey could give him some tips. The red clothing and the mystery would be intimidating to most, but Kyle had too much experience to be scared of anyone. He approached the red-clad man with confidence and casualness.
"Hey. Yo, Killey. You and Lorelai, huh? Have a good history?"
Killey might have tilted his hat upwards, but Kyle didn't observe any other movements. He tried again.
"She ditched you, huh? Were you not good enough, or did you piss her off..."
"Shut up, brat." With that, Killey walked away. Kyle smirked. He didn't exactly get anything useful out of Killey, but from the reaction, he figured that something indeed happened between the two. He would just have to try again to get the juicy details.
