If you don't have a problem with your sugar intake or your cholesterol levels, you may want to try this authentic recipe for buttered beere from 1588. Well, it's pretty authentic - they've halved the sugar content, although you can go the whole hog and go back to the original amount. The people in Tudor times loved sugar, and it was outlandishly expensive, so very sweet dishes and drinks were served up as a sign of wealth.
Anyways, if you'd like to give it a try, here's the link to the recipe:
http://recipewise.co.uk/buttered-beere-1588 It's interesting, even if you only pop over to have a read.
There's also a rather good show called Heston's Feasts (I think you can watch eps on youtube - or give it a google to see where you can view it) that does feasts from different eras. I've just watched the Tudor feast episode (hence my interest in butterbeer being revived) and I'm on the lookout for the episode that has the Roman feast - it's supposed to be bizarrely fascinating.
Addendum: I've found it on youtube! And the Aperitif... Pig's Nipple Scratchings!!! (
quaffswinegaily and
raettawy will love this!) I've only watched half of part one so far, but it's positively fascinating!
Here's part one, and you can follow on from there on your own if you dare!

I really have to watch the rest of these!
