COMPUTER SCIENCE BLOG #1

Jul 29, 2008 16:58

Alright, so I have to write a blog for my computer science class.  Personally, I think it's bullshit that I even have to take computer science.  I've been using computers since I was eight years old.  I know how to use one.  I know enough about computers to be able to test out of the class.  UNFORTUNATELY, when I took the test, all the Mac questions were about the Tiger OS, which was a disadvantage to me because I use Leopard.  So I missed passing the test by 5 points.  I don't think it's fair that I failed a test-out because the school's software is outdated.  I mean, we still use Microsoft Works 2003 in this school.  FYI,  it's 2008.  WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, AIPH?!

Since I've been here, I've had lots of ups and downs.  A lot of highschool drama that I was not prepared for.  I took a year off from school before coming here, whereas most kids here came straight from highschool.  So even if they've been here for a few years and are older than me, I've still got more experience in the real adult world, which gives me the upper hand in some respects.  The problem is that everyone else is still in that highschool mentality and so they still cause highschool drama.  When I came here I was really hoping to be spending time with mature young adults, but I feel like I'm back in highschool all over again.  I really was not prepared for this.  And sorry for the overuse of the word highschool; it's annoying me too but that's really what I'm reminded of right now.

Despite the drama, and despite the outdated software from the school, I do really enjoy being here.  The friends I have made so far have been nothing short of awesome.  I already have a pretty big group of friends, which I'm not used to, but it's definitely a lot of fun.  The boys all have the hots for me, but they also have a lot of respect for me, because unlike other girls, I can, and  have kicked all their asses in Super Smash Bro's Brawl on Wii.  And I don't even own a Wii.  I really love that guys respect me for that.  That's another thing I'm not used to.

I really love living here in the city.  My hometown is only a 20 minute PATCO ride away, so I really can go home whenever I want to.  I could commute if I had to.  But I really prefer to live here.  It's much more convenient for me to be able to walk out of my building and go down the street to my class, as opposed to waking up an hour and a half earlier to get ready and get on the train.  Also I love that I don't need a car.  I love to walk, and the fact that I've been walking everywhere for the past two and a half weeks has really been incredible for my legs and butt.  It also helps to walk everywhere since I never bothered to take my driver's test.  Like I said, living here is just a lot more convenient.

I think being here would be a lot more difficult if I didn't already have friends in the area.  I have a few friends who live in South Philly, a friend at 1500 Chestnut, and another at 19th and Spruce.  Of course, all guys, because I've always gotten along with them better than girls.  The fact that they're guys also makes me feel a little safer living here, but really I don't think I have a lot to worry about.  I've noticed that if you avoid making eye contact, people won't talk to you.

Well, my arm is starting to hurt from typing stuff and this keyboard is pretty annoying.  It looks like I've completed the 5-paragraph requirement for this blog anyway, so I'm gonna stop writing it now.  More next time.  And hopefully more interesting.  :)

Ciao!
