A couple years back there was this chain letter getting sent around.  I think a couple of the guys from the video shop sent it as a joke.  Anyway, it started off with some urban legend about some woman getting abducted from a Walmart parking lot when two guys jumped out of a van beside her parked car and made off with her.  Then the email gave all these useless pieces of advice like  "don't try to get into your car if it's parked beside a van" or "stab them in the eyes with your car keys" followed by the standard plea to forward the email to everyone you know, and if you don't a meteorite will strike you in the head.

And no offense to the self-defense strategies of "kick him in the crotch" or "use your keys to stab their eyes out" but if whoever's stalking you is close enough to you that those would work, they've already gotten way too close.  If you want to know what real self-defense is, it's keeping your eyes and ears open and trusting your gut.

If you're in a situation and you feel uncomfortable for some reason, get the hell out of it.  Know where you are, and where you're going, and even if you don't know, act like you do.  And yeah, don't accept open drinks from people.  That's how you get slipped roofies.

...But if someone attacking you does get close, wait for the second or third blow to kick him in the groin.  Punch 'em in the throat first.  They usually aren't expecting that.

I almost forgot what it feels like.  The vibe of a city that's got some psycho serial killer on the loose.  Back then it was Henry and Vicki and Celluci, and I was just the street barometer, reading the fear on the streets.  They didn't even tell me about the grimoire and the demon until it was all over.

Heh.  I've still got my little cross though.  Back then we weren't taking chances.  Who'd have thought we'd be saved by the same thing we were all scared of.  'Vampire Stalks Toronto Streets'.

Yeah.   We were lucky he did.

street smarts, memories, killer in the city, self-defense, the vibe, being careful, eyes and ears on the street
