Writer's Block: Reconsidering Children's Books
Well, Shel Silverstein was a very sick person; he once wrote and published a whole book of very morbid sexual poetry (one of the poems talked about a man hanging himself with his own penis). But personally, I think The Giving Tree was one of his more beautiful stories and I think he intended the book to be about love and sacrifice. He made it to show that love REQUIRES sacrifice, not one or the other.
