The scuttling is the worst. He can hear the clicking of thousands of tiny feet scurrying, the sounds of the devils. He mutters to himself, old half-remembered prayers, but the sound refuses to be drowned out.
He tries screaming instead. "Help! Somebody help me!"

She leans down in front of Jeremiah and gently touches his cheek. "God will reward you for your troubles. You won't be harmed."
She disappears between his blinks.

Without a word, he crosses the room to the hutches, opens one and reaches inside. A small beetle with a red carapace crawls out of the hutch and over his arm.

Grant hasn't noticed the beetle on his sleeve. It's making its way to his back, chugging right along. He closes the hutch and gathers up the bones.
"Are you hungry? Something to drink?" Kill him already. The longer he lives the more you become

He looks at the clean, stripped bones in Grant's hands. "Why do you take the fingers?" he asks.

There's a large laundry washbasin with a gooseneck faucet next to the washing machine. Grant hunts up a mug and rinces it out before filling it with water. Along the way, the beetle starts moving down his waist and then his pantsleg. When Grant crouches in front of Jeremiah it hops off entirely and disappears behind a stack of cardboard boxes.
"Have you ever heard of the ancient hunters that would eat the hearts of their fallen enemies to gain their power and knowledge?" He'll help Jeremiah take a drink, if he wants it.

"The demons want to kill you, and they want to stop me. But they never will." He thinks he knows what Jeremiah is to him. He is the last one. The most powerful of all. The Believer is the most powerful soul of all.
