Okay...
Here we go.
I'm going to start off with the supplies I'm using.
First and foremost: Tape. I'm using cheap, frosty "invisible" tape from Wal-mart.
Some wood skewers for... like, BBQ and stuff. They're also from Wal-mart.
Next: Newspaper. Anything works.
And: Some very bendable wire that is easy to cut.
And some scissors strong enough to cut the wire.
Some water. I'm using tap. (the bottle is lying to you, it's tap water.)
Then some school glue. Any glue works, this is just what will be making the paper mache
.
And a paintbrush, to paint. (Duh.)
And lastly, paint. I have a dark orangey-yellow and a bright red color from Wal-mart that was left over from making my chainsaw.
And if you missed the title, remember this is for paper mache
horns. The base will also work for the masking tape method, but other
than that if you want to go more expensive, it's up to you.
Okay, here we go.
Step one: Make basic bases.
Basically, you're going to take the skewer and break(Or cut, you can cut yours if you want. I'm lazy.) it to the size you want.
REMEMBER! For the pointy part of the horn, you're going to want a pointy end, right? Right.
You will need two of about this size. Measure it according to how far
away from your head you want it to go.(I made one of these pointy, for
the "L" shaped one and the other pointy for the other one.)
Then, make one for the short part of the "L" shaped horn. Again, make this the size you want it.
(This one I also gave a pointy end, because it's pointy.)
Then, for the rounded one. Take a bit of the wire and cut off enough to make the rounded part with for your desired size.
Then, make sure it is shaped correctly. A nice crescent shape.
(Mine is bumpy :| )
Now, take the two main parts (the first ones) and tape them to their
appropriate attachments (the second & third parts). The places I
taped are shown here: (RED lines will show front parts of tape, GREEN
for the back side that you can't see.)
If you did it right, your horns should look right abut like this right now:
If so, congrats! Now we get to go to Step two!
Step Two: Making the first full base.
I'm starting with the awkward one with the crescent on the top of it. Because it's awkward.
Okay, so you have your base now.
It should look something very close to this.
First, we're going to take a long, thin strip of newspaper
and wrap it around the top of the main part of the horn, like so:
It might take two or three strips of paper, but remember, this will be
the thinnest piece of the main part of the horn, so be careful not to
make it too think to where making it thicker would make it look bad (but
it will also be the same thickness of the thickest part of the
crescent, so keep that in mind and don't make it too small, either.) I
made mine this thick:
and I taped it down.
Now to move on to the crescent.
Take another thin strip(s) of newspaper:
and roll it up
tightly into a small piece with the same thickness as the last one we made. Like so:
Now take this roll and tape it along the middle of the bottom of the crescent
to where it won't move.
It should look like this:
Now take a thicker strip of newspaper:
And tape it like so:
(taping it diagonally like this will help it bend the way we'll need it too later.)
Tape the back side of the strip like so:
After you get it taped, start wrapping it along the horn.
I taped it here
to help hold it in place so I could wrap it easier.
Keep wrapping, following the wires, keeping close to them, to get their shape.
When you get to the tip of the crescent, you should still have about
half of the strip left. To get the top good and pointy, you'll want to
create a cone at the top, first by taping the newspaper down like this:
(The GOLDISH line now represents where the wire is.)
(The
tape will hold down the newspaper so the cone won't open up as you
continue wrapping) Now take the newspaper and fold it like:
and wrap the newspaper
until you've made it around once.
(then
tape it down.)You should notice that the paper is now angled in the
opposite direction it was when you started. Guess what that means! Now
to go back down and make sure things are as thick as they need to be!
Sometime during this process, the newspaper will need to be folded to
get the correct shape, that's okay! fold it where it needs to fold so
you get the right shape!
When you get back to the middle, you will be taping down whatever newspaper you have left.
Here:
You should end with this:
Now, repeat the process on the other side!
Start:
Finish:
!
Now, if they're a bit out of shape, remember: they have a wire base so:
They bend! Get them in a nice, even, round shape!
Now: COVER IT (thinly) WITH TAPE (just a single layer works fine.)
(I use one reeeeaaallly long piece of tape.)
I started at one tip and just worked my way to the other tip. If you
do it this way, and have trouble getting past the middle, take the tape
when you get to this part:
(the tape is actually going toward the right of this picture, it's just the camera messing up.)
and tape it around like so:
Bring it up above the middle,
(THIS IS THE BACK!) and bring it back down on the opposite side of the middle, making kind of a "V" shape around it.
If you want you can start in the middle and use two separate pieces, but I like this way. Either way, it's all taped down now
and we get to move on to the main part of the horn!
Step Three: Finish making the first full base.
Start with a full piece of newspaper.
And tape it here:
Then take the top and fold it around the (now newspaper covered top part) skewer.
Go all the way around the newspaper
and tape all the way around it.
It should look like this:
Now, fold the newspaper upward
(OH LOOK, I TURNED IT UPSIDE DOWN.)
to where the fold lines up with the end of the skewer.
Now, take the folded part and wrap it around the end of the skewer
And tape it down here
then fold it once again, and line the edge of the newspaper up with the end of the skewer.
Then, fold the newspaper so that it's flat against the base, like so:
and you should get this shape:
and now:
TAAAPE.
Wrap it so the paper doesn't move!
When you're done wrapping, it should look like this.
If yours, like mine, ends up with the bottom of the horn being too thin, take a thick piece of newspaper,
fold it in half,
and wrap it along the bottom,
then tape it down here,
and it should look like this:
Now to make the flat bottom, so you can attach it to a headband/something to keep it on your head.
Take a shorter, thick piece of newspaper
and fold it in half to get almost a square.
then tape the corners of it down onto the bottom of your horn.
on each side
(and remember to tape down any points that stick up).
And, guess what?
YOU'RE DONE!
Your horn should look like this and you can now move on to Part 2 (a link will be added when part 2 exists) of the tutorial!
