At 5:30 AM today, Eastern Standard Time, my dear sister fell to the crushing forces of our nation's capitalistic machinery. There against the cold, stone walls of the local Best Buy, she stood hungrily and sleepy-eyed in the freezing mist of a predawn November day. And what noble cause was served by this masochistic self-sacrifice? To buy a microwave oven, of course. This was her way of taking advantage of the American dream, the backbone of the free world... the sale. Her rationale was exactly as intended by those who have hypnotized the entire country, that by spending more money on the sale, she will have saved from having to buy at a normally higher price. It makes perfect sense, should it not? And the wisdom of our great leaders has led the country spiraling down a similar path, believing that deficit spending can continue indefinitely without hurting interest rates and the average prices of goods. Perhaps we should aspire to be as fool-minded and nearsighted. At least then we can perpetuate without a guilty conscience.
