Puck: Guys. Guuuuuuuys. Pluto whispers "DEAD SCREAM" for the irony.
El: ^^
Puck: Which is why "PLUTO DEADLY SCREAM" was the worst attack ever.
Puck: Because WAY TO MISS THE JOKE.
Puck: Now, if it was "PLUTO DEADLY SCREAM" that would be okay.
El: yeah
Puck: Cloverway you were worse than DiC AND THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING.
El: ?
Puck: DiC dubbed the first two seasons of Sailor Moon; Cloverway did the next two as well as the movies.
El: *nods*
Puck: DiC managed to keep some of the name sequencing intact. Cloverway... didn't.
El: remind me?
Puck: Serena? Diminuitive of Serenity.
Amy? From Ami.
Raye? From Rei.
Lita? Similar sound to Leda, a moon of Jupiter.
Mina? Short for Minako.
Puck: Jedite, corruption of Jadeite.
Neflyte, interpretation of Nephrite.
Zoycite, corruption of Zoisite.
Malachite, keeping with the overall "stone" theme even if the switch from Kunzite is inexplicable.
El: actually, at least according to tvtropes, there was some legal issue with using 'kunzite'
El: exactly what that was i have no idea. but there was a genuine reason.
Puck: Really? Huh.
Puck: Still, Malachite is in keeping with the stone theme.
El: yes
Puck: Cloverway gives us... Amara and Michelle.
El: michelle makes sense. michiru
Puck: Michelle is also what the fandom used for a "dub-verse" Michiru long before Cloverway came up with it.
El: amara and trista, on the other hand, do not.
El: ...was her name trista? i forget.
Puck: Yes.
El: even if they had to go with a radically different name, they should have gone with another unisex one. like andy, or alex.
Puck: Irwin Toys had their own dub!names, I believe... Corrin for Haruka. Corrin, at least, sounds masculine, or at least unisex.
Puck: Setsuna... I don't remember hers. Hang on, let me grab my RPG book.
El: and then they left hotaru as hotaru.
Puck: Okay. Irwin Toys names:
Haruka -- Corrin
Michiru -- Nerissa (sea-related...)
Setsuna -- Celia
El: *nods* michelle makes sense to me. i would've gone with probably alex for haruka. setsuna...hm. i'm not sure what i would've made up for her if i were making up dub names.
Puck: corrin seems to mean "spear" which leaves me kind of "eh", but given that Nerissa is a sea-related name, I would have themed that way.
Puck: celia seems to mean "blind", which given Sestuna might be ironic.
El: *nods*
Puck: Celia can also mean "heaven" however.
Puck: So were it not so feminine, it might actually suit Haruka.
El: *nods* something about celia doesn't seem to fit for setsuna for me. i'm not sure why.
Puck: Too young?
El: not exactly. too...it evokes a certain sense of innocence. which doesn't suit her at all.
Puck: Nerissa (sea sprite) for our Sea King... therefore we need to go for the Heaven King and the Dark King.
Puck: ...I get on these Kicks.
El: i still like michelle for michiru. go with a phonetic approximation. and i like alex for haruka.
El: ...ooh, or micah.
Puck: Micah is too close to the "stone" theme.
Puck: Mica.
El: ...if this were a french dub, i might go with gabriel(le). pronounced the same way in french, and would tie in with michelle nicely.
El: micah's related to michael, which is why i suggested it.
Puck: I'm going off of Nerissa still because I prefer themes to approximations. >_> Lani is a unisex Hawaiian name meaning sky or heaven.
El: *nods* lani reads too obviously female for me. and i don't like nerissa. ...possibly because of enchanted and i might have liked it for her before, but as of now i can't.
Puck: I've always liked Nerissa as a name.
Puck: Taran also means "heaven"
El: *nods* it's a nice name, but right now i just see susan sarandon chewing the scenery for the evuls when i hear that name. so sticking with michelle.
Puck: Which amuses me because in my head it sounds simliar to "terran" which also ties to world shaking
El: that one might work.
Puck: You stick with your michelle, I'll stick with my nerissa.
Puck: Dark names... well, there's a lot more of those.
Puck: Mostly male. *mutters*
El: melanie
Puck: ...oooh. "Leilah" means "dark-haired beauty".
El: i like leilah better. because i have too many melanie's in my head already.
El: *melanies
Puck: Hee. Matlal means "dark green", but it's aztec.
Puck: Melantha, dark flower. Possibly more suited for Hotaru, that one.
Puck: I like Leilah the best, I think.
El: ...melantha feels too old for hotaru. i think i'd go for something like lily for her. something that feels impermanent.
Puck: So Nerissa, Taran, Leilah. Hotaru... "firefly sprouting from the earth".
Puck: shortlived but beautiful
El: *nods* i like lily for that reason, because it evokes that idea, at least to me.. on the other hand, it's too close to leilah.
Puck: I'm searching for names that mean "lily" :D
El: ^^
Puck: Crina, Romanian.
Sanna, Hebrew
Shoshana, Hebrew
Any variant of Susan, apparently.
Puck: Susanne, Susan, Susie, Sue....
Puck: Suzetta? Really?
El: ...hm. none of the ones you've listed sound right.
Puck: Sukie? Do not think so name site.
Puck: Any other things that evoke that idea? Shortlived beauty, corrupted beauty, ephemeral-ness?
Puck: flowers or whatever.
El: i'm checking another site for lily-names, when it loads. um...violet.
El: which is also her color scheme, so that might work better.
Puck: Well, her colours are purple.
Puck: Violet. I like that.
Puck: Are't they pretty fragile anyway?
El: yeah. ...i don't like violet as a name exactly. un sec, lemme check something
El: if we can't find smoethign better, it'll do, though.
Puck: It makes me think of the Boxcar children -- Violet was a shy and fragile girl. I think she gets sick towards the end of the first book, too.
El: ...huh. did not know yolanda meant violet.
Puck: Ew. I do not like that name.
El: ...violet will have to do. it has just the right level of old-fashionedness, too.
Puck: I never did understand why they left Hotaru's name alone.
El: me, neither. but i named my gerbil after her. ...my sister renamed her hoho and i was the only one who remembered her real name.
Puck: *grins*
Puck: I named my hamster Fireball, so.
Puck: THERE IS A CONNECTION
Puck: Granted Fireball was way before I saw Sailor Moon.
El: ...i think hotaru was the one who killed my sister's gerbil and then ran away. but it might have been karl's.
Puck: *snork*
El: either way, we ended up with a dead gerbil, a missing gerbil, and one who died of old age.
