Slytherin House Scarf

Someone I care immensely about is a major Harry Potter fan (amongst other things) and wanted to give a surprise by gifting a Slytherin House scarf. There was the option of buying online but to give it a bit more special touch I wanted to make it by hand.

There was option of knitting or crochet. I’m more familiar with crochet so I’ve looked about for a similar style to knitting, which I did called Tunisian Knit Stitch. Maybe in the future I can attempt with proper knitting needles.

Tools is basic:
  • 1 long crochet needle (mine is a 4.5mm);
  • 1 pair of scissors;
  • 1 big head needle commonly known as a embroidery needle.

Materials:
  • 3 skeins of main color (green)
  • 1 skein of secondary color (grey/white)
Now The reason for so much yarn, in this case, was because I followed the official one I was gifted by a friend a number of years ago. And it’s very long adult version one.

Given the yarn is drastically different as well needle scale, I had to guess on how I’d work on it, grabbing the green first.

I started with a normal 50 chain stitch for the starting point.

Yes this is a very wide and long scarf as you can see and this is after about two skeins of green already used up. Lovely handmade wand there was made by the same person this scarf is for, customized to my huge craze to Winter Soldier. Felt fitting to have it help me keep the scarf open for photos.

To then working on the Tunisian Knit Stitch, the one that goes in all the way and not just in the front loops.

Its a very nice stitch as you can see. The front definitely looks like knitting (right) but its not, despite the back looks different.

The pattern was simple to figure out after a few rows was done.

Pattern ended up being:
  • 23 green;
  • 3 grey;
  • 5 green;
  • 3 grey.

This goes on 14 times before we add one last set of 23 green, so it starts and ends with a big green patch.

One the last skein of green here, in comparison to my original scarf. I’ve noted that colorwise it is not exactly the same, however I went with the limited selection of colors I have in my area (live middle of nowhere).

Huge isn’t it when you see it all stretched out over the bed for full view. The Bear was helping keeping it from curling/rolling up, since every knitting/crochet project will curl as you work on it. When done you can fix that.

Once you got it all done, you take the plastic needle to hide in the tails from the color changes as well when changing between skeins. Scissors to snip out any extra bits if needed and done.

Working on a side bit hat/beanie but I’m uncertain if it’ll fit well the person.

Ignore my model for the beanie.

Scarves can be to order at 10€ + shipping.
