Birthday Party for Melinda!

Sarah had baked Melinda a chocolate cake for her birthday; a delicious, moist, ooey-gooey chocolate cake, the kind that needs to be accompanied with a tall glass of cold milk. It was decorated with the words 'Happy Birthday, Mel!' and several white frosting flowers ( Read more... )

Gibbs arrives at the door by PINpoint, looking nervous. Since he hasn't been working for a while, money was tight, and he wasn't able to get Melinda quite what he would have liked for her birthday. Still he has a little box with something inside, and a big bouquet of flowers.

Schreber is pretty sure his gift is okay, since Sarah helped him pick out the books. He wrapped them himself. It's a very nice looking package but it took him a long time because he was fussy about how the corners folded and everything. The ribbon on it is safe because Orwell thinks the streamers are more exciting.

Schreber lets Gibbs in and goes looking for his cane. Maybe he can poke Orwell away from the streamers because he can't reach that high otherwise.

Sarah is a little too impatient for Schreber to return with his cane. She gets a piece of luncheon meat from the kitchen and tries to entice the raven down to her.

"Oh, hi, Cornelius." She smiles at their first guest. "Melinda isn't here yet. Would you like something to drink?" If she's worried about the missing man who Schreber is trying to find, she's hiding it well.

He smiles back. "I wanted to come separately. It feels more like a party if you're waiting for the guest of honor to arrive. A drink would be wonderful."

When Schreber comes back with his cane Orwell is already on the kitchen counter with his lunchmeat. At least that problem is solved! He puts the cane in the corner because he doesn't really use it in the house anyway and gets out cups so Sarah can serve whatever. He wants to be useful and he's still awkward around Gibbs. "I'm not very experienced at par...ties still."

Mel arrives, feeling a little embarrassed that she's the absolute last. She's wearing clothes that'll fit in with the City, and has her hair in a ponytail. She really needs to get it cut someday.

She knocks at the door, trying to hide how excited and bouncy she is. And then she decides that it's not worth the effort.

Gibbs is closest to the door. He may also be the most excited to see Mel. Not that he hasn't already seen her that day. Regardless, he lunges for the door and opens it hurriedly. "Happy Birthday!"

Schreber offers Rat a drink like a good host, and makes him sit down too, and then there is another knock at the door and Gibbs is hurrying off! As long as Schreber doesn't have to do a lot of hurrying it's all okay. This is why he doesn't answer the door much, especially on holidays and parties. It's easier to stay in one place. "We should have John ex...pand the kitchen."

Thorn gives Rat a friendly nod from his seat, but his expression clearly says that he's awkward in the setting. The kitchen is fast filling up, and should anyone else need a chair Thorn will be the first to offer up his seat. Were it not for the social obligations of greeting Melinda with a happy birthday, he'd be lurking on the back porch now.
