Tom is sorting through a stack of clipped newspaper articles when Ume comes back. He's got a small notebook, too, and every so often, he writes something down. He's keeping a record, just like Dr. Schreber asked. It's almost been one week, and the notebook is nearly full.

He hasn't been around much. He's been trying to track down John Murdoch without much luck. Doctor Schreber, however, has some information listed in public records. Mostly related to his former psychiatry practice, but it's a start.

He also drove past his house again. There was a woman outside, doing a little yard work. Must be the girlfriend. She looked familiar, but he wasn't sure why.

He wished he knew her name.

Ume smiles a little at Tom, but it seems odd. A sort of happy dazed, and her eyes have a gleam to them, like a kid that just got away with trouble.

There is blood on her knuckles and a tiny bit on her cheek.

"Hey," she says, breathless and smiling, "I need to use the shower. Do you mind?"

Tom nearly jumps out of his skin when Ume shows up. How does she manage to always sneak up on him? "Huh? Yeah, sure. There's a clean towel on the rack." He frowns a little at the sight of blood and gets up. "Hey, you okay?"

"Hmm? Oh, yeah. I'm fine. I'm really good."

She smiles. It's the same eerie smile. "Couple o' people aren't, but eh." she shrugs.

In the morning, bleary and a little stiff, Rat wakes to find Willie gone. The older man lives on his own on the streets, and although he may not always be sure when he is, he manages well enough. It's likely he wandered off to look for a breakfast handout or have a morning cigarette, which isn't a bad idea to Rat's mind either. The beach seems comparatively safe and calm, even if the pickings are thin. It is in a groggy but peaceful state of mind that Rat ambles out the side door with the broken lock and hunts his cigarettes for pockets ( ... )

Killings seven and eight are soon spread like wildfire in the rumor mill of the streets. The ninth, with its total disconnection from the M.O. of the other killings, is not talked about and thus Harley does not know about it.

What interests Harley is the eighth. The one left alive. She does not know Gibbs, or his connection to John or Daniel or Sarah. But she does know that by leaving him alive, that the killer is sending a message to the person they are really targeting.

Harley only hopes that the victim is left aware enough to know his killer, because so far her little investigation has gone no where. She wonders how much deeper she should get, in order to start thinking in the mind of a serial killer again. Obviously, she is not deep enough yet. Because she has not been able to help this case any, nor find her place of belonging in the City.
