Farewell, Nebuchadnezzar

Jun 27, 2008 14:39

Just spent the morning/early afternoon running damage control on my trusty writing/designing rig, "Nebuchadnezzar." I've had this computer for a long time, and it has (had) many warts and anomalies and other personality quirks (no functioning sound card, perpetually corrupt .dll files, pitifully under RAMmed, etc.) that I've dodged, dealt with, or ignored over the years by Frankensteining additional components and peripherals into place. I was about due to back everything up again (was planning to do so this weekend), but the old box beat me to the punch today with death entire. We're talking full-scale meltdown-Nebu was sweatin' enough rads that I probably could have grown a third eyeball if I'd stayed with it any longer.

I managed to surgically remove the old brain from the quite-fried machine and salvage all of my documents, files, etc. (including some not-yet-published book cover designs, web site redesigns, and advertising work)*.

So, for the immediate future (working on a new plan now), I am without imaging or coding capability (I lost a lot of expensive software and plug-ins, most of which is grossly out of date and needed to be replaced anyway, but still . . .) I'll bounce back somehow, though-there's work to do.

Lesson: even if you're planning to back up everything tomorrow, do it today instead.

*I know at least three people on my f-list who'll be happy to read this.
