So far, I have already forgotten that I am now 23. It seems like a nice age to be though, especially since turning 23 seems to involve the receiving of a Dalek-orange hand blender, a set of porcelain measuring cups shaped like cute kitties, a massive boardgame and some nice shirts

Admit to them that you know that their is a problem, that you don't support the problem - but let them know that you love/care/will be friendly towards them either way.
chances are, that if their family is doing everything they can - the person will be beginning to feel isolated. Let them know that they're loved, but the problem behavior needs to be reduced/stopped.

I think V has it right, not pussyfooting around that you know, but being there and being supportive is really important. But at the same time, people who don't think they have a problem, especially when it comes to alcohol is really, really difficult, because of the way they see alcohol

When I say not pussyfooting about that you know - I think that came out wrong. Being too confrontational in the circumstances could just lead to the problem becoming even more hidden, which is something nobody wants.

Thanks Cullen. I guess I kind of came to those conclusions a little myself, about just being supportive and being there for the person while they deal with what's going on with prof. help and the support of their family.
